Fair point, but whether you’re prepping for a hurricane or the end of the world, it’s all prepping.

And I have done a couple podcast episodes about saving money, budgeting, debt control. It’s all prepping to me.

I think someone else mentioned it early in this post, but the only SHTF preps for your average Joe are skills. The people that can truly afford to prepare for anything beyond a natural disaster are the 1%ers, and no matter how much they stockpile they will eventually need medical help or some other form of assistance from the outside world. At that point you better have friends.

All of us will need to retire at some point, it's a 100% certainty. That's prep #1, and for me the sooner the better! All of us will lose power at some point, that's prep #2. Some of us get hit by hurricanes, fires, floods every so often, those types of preps are #3. Beyond that, unless you're a 1%er it's just throwing money away that should be going towards prep #1. I enjoy camping and shooting and many other hobbies that could be utilized for many different levels of prep, but I don't own or plan to own any extra stuff that I'm not using regularly. If you really want to plan for the .000000001% chance that the world is coming to an end learn how to weld, fix an engine, basic to advanced medical procedures, farming, foraging, combat or any other useful skill that will keep you more friends than enemies. A big one a lot of people don't think about is communication skills. Learn about psychology and how people think. No quantity of freeze dried potatoes or cases of 5.56 can replace knowledge, and the best part is that it's free.

Agreed. Knowledge and skills that are valuable to someone else are the only thing that will keep you and your family alive when Armageddon. If your assets are in your brain and your skills enrich the collective, you are in like flint. Some skills being more valuable than others. That, and this: Nothing can trump a carton of cigarettes. You can part the Red Sea with the offer of a pack of cigarettes five days after a hurricane passes. Better get ten cartons.

As an aside, do you know how fun it is after a hurricane to BBQ everyone's donated meat in the big BBQ pit down at the golf course that didn't see fit to buy a generator? More food than a neighborhood can eat. They are pushing it on you to take home. Now THAT is a party! Eat every kind of wild game there is.

I often cite skills. If you have developed techniques for fire building and water processing with nothing but your hands, you can start from there. I live in a buffet, streams and creeks everywhere, animals all up in my shit every 5 minutes. Chances are high that in whatever weird ass fantastical doomsday scenario y’all cook up, and despite all the kooks who are like “night vision and an arsenal of weapons” (those people are the problem, not the solution btw) you will find me kicking back in flip flops enjoying the day in my natures buffet. And for all the eco-sensitive people...I’m shitting in holes and cutting down trees for my awesome tree fort.

Every day I don’t have to strap up and put on plates is a good day. I’ll enjoy my time, thank you.

The creepiest notion I've experienced talking with preppers, is that sometimes they genuinely feel disappointed, if the scourge doesn't materialize. I have seen this with preppers that were preppers before it was in vogue, who 20 years later appear saddened that our civilization has sustained and their planning has not be put to use. I also saw it in many instances over Y2K. That was a prepper paradise. Many people prepped for months of no electricity, food, water, banking, gas, etc. at the turn of the century. When nothing happened, the preppers that I know experienced a noticeable disappointment or even depressive qualities.

I love people and have not yet fully grasped the disappointment of preparing for the worst and not entering social meltdown.

It is all fun to think about. I have a remote cabin deep in the woods that is off the grid, no running water, no electricity, no phone, no cell service. I keep some food and water there that I call my "survival food". I have thought if I need to bug out I would head to my Cabin and live like I normally do when I stay there.

You need to find higher quality prepper friends. I don't know anyone who's sad that our society is stable, our country is peaceful, and we live relatively free from fear.

    But that's just me...

Haha! Could be that case that I have only interacted with low quality preppers. :) Will you be my high quality prepper friend?

Mate, all I see are people angry about the stability of this nation. And that statement is as far as I’ll wade into U.S. politics on this forum.

Being a "prepper" and being an "optimist" are by definition mutually exclusive....

Being self reliant is part of being a dude.

The moment you become a “prepper” is when it crosses into the recreation category.

Depends on what scenario/duration you are preparing for. My truck is ALWAYS loaded with the following:
    - 20L of water
    - 40L of extra fuel
    - 2 week's worth of freeze dried food for two people
    - 2 week's worth of food for a large dog
    - propane stove and fuel bottles
    - pots, pans and cutlery
    - water bottles
    - 1 full change of clothes each for me and my wife with boots
    - hygiene/toilet supplies
    - emergency radio
    - 2x -20 degree C sleeping bags
    - 2x fleece sleeping bag liners
    - 2x pillows
    - 2x thermarests mattresses
    - 2 person tent (spare shelter)
    - water filter
    - comprehensive first aid/trauma kit
    - full sized shovel
    - full size axe
    - booster pack
    - spare fluids and maintainance equipment for truck. (Tools, oil, fluids, rags, etc)

I am sure I am missing items from the list.

This is all stored in the truck bed and cab and I still have lots of room for cargo, and is neatly stored away.

It all depends on your context, location, need and purpose.

    Hope this helps!

I think she was looking for decent things to have in the truck in case of small emergencies, not Red Dawn... hah I have some basic stuff I bring when I go on longer trips, a tire plug kit, one of those small portable jump-packs, first aid kit, tow rope, gloves, extra clothes, snow broom/scraper, folding shovel, a good torque wrench and socket for the wheels, phone charger cables etc etc.

Most of these things can fit in the storage compartments under the rear seats or if it doesnt matter if they get wet, you can put them in the rear storage compartments in the bed.

Yes. And she got some good solid info. At this point we’re just hashing out who’s who. Who has the sling shot. Who has the most baller flip flops. Who has the 300’ solar array and who has the biggest supply of chicken a la king MREs.

What I find laughable is when people start throwing firearms into the mix.

You're more likely to encounter dangers such as; dehydration, exposure, trauma/infection if SHTF.

If you're going to add a 12hour gun, what are you going to do with the guy that has a 24hour gun?

Invest in some NODS if you're going to go all out.
