I just recently noticed that at about 40 miles per hour when the gear shifts on my automatic transmission I feel a slight "bump bump." Does that make any sense? It's not a vibration, more like the gear is settling into place, but I don't notice it any other time I switch gears...I'd say it's right around 3rd or 4th.

Anyone else notice this with their trucks? Anything to be concerned about?

    Thanks!

    Thats the lockup clutch.

in 4th and 5th gear the programming of the trans will engage the lockup clutch so that input and output of the torque converter is equal for better MPGs. You can see this by watching your rpms. if its not locked you can roll into the throttle and watch rpms rise a bit but speed wont. If it is locked up a lil roll of the throttle will be a linear relationship between the speed and rpms.

Gotcha. Had no clue. Glad to know it's normal and nothing to be concerned about. Thanks for the reply!

I get that sometimes when shifting from 4th to 5th gear. And it is not the torque convertor release as this will happen after the 5th. Took it to the dealer and they said it is normal and they talked about the torque convertor mechanism blah blah.
A lot of people were complaining about that and some said that it is worse in cold weather :argue:
FYI my torque convertor failed at about 32k miles and was replaced

So conflicting advice. Anyone else think I should be coming concerned?

No need to be concerned man. VERY FEW people have issues with the 5 spd auto in the 2nd gen.

Normal. These are pretty good tranny's overall, but not buttery smooth.

Hah. I like that..."buttery smooth". Truthfully, besides that little hiccup right to 4th, it really does seem buttery smooth!

Personally i wish it shifted a little firmer... though my old truck (2001 chevy 2500hd) had a built trans and a shift kit that would shift so firm / hard you could chirp the tires between first and second when it would shift at 50mph.

07' with 5-spd auto. I've had what I thought was a driveline vibration at 35-40mph for the past few months that I've been trying to diagnose. Finally gave up and brought it in to have the driveshaft balanced and found out my transmission has failed at 156k... Sitting at the Toyota dealer now questioning my life :frusty:

On my 15 , I noticed that when it’s real cold, and it only does it around 20mph when it shifts to the next gear. I contributed it to the transmission fluid hasn’t warmed up. When it’s warm it doesn’t do it.

I have also check my fluid level.

How did you check your fluid level?

Thank you for the reassurance! I have noticed this since I bought my '06 in September. Glad to know it is normal.

I had the vibration around 35mph, but that was my truck shifting 3rd-4th according to the dealer. Apparently, it wasn't fully engaging which points to transmission failure. I also had the "bump" from time to time when it shifted on the road at higher speeds. Hopefully nobody else is having the same problem though.

Are they going to replace your whole transmission? Did they diagnose it by doing a test drive or did they do something else? Now I am questioning whether I should bring mine in to have them take a look.

Yep, full transmission replacement with a remanufactured unit. Service writer originally thought the vibration could be the propeller shaft issue that's been addressed with the warranty enhancement, but they determined the prop shaft was fine. Tech took it for test drive to check it out.

I am assuming this is coming out of your pocket and not covered under any extended warranties or the like, correct?
