I wanted to attend this race but had to go to a wedding instead. As odd as it sounds, I wish I could've been there, maybe I could've made a difference afterwards.

This accident highlights how important preparedness is if you're heading offroad. Just think about it - we head to the middle of nowhere to engage in a dangerous activity. The number of trucks you find out on trail runs with zero emergency gear in them is amazing. You have to acknowledge that accidents are possible and that EMS/Fire response will be a very long time.

I would highly encourage everyone to learn basic first aid skills, such as evaluating an injured person, establishing an airway, CPR, controlling bleeding, treat shock, and splinting a fracture. The medical supplies required to do such are widely available (galls.com) and are not very expensive. The training is available through many non-profits as well as in manuals online. The Army FM on first aid is available at http://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/army/fm4_25x11.pdf and is an easy to understand guide to first aid.

I'm sure flares would have been helpful as well to stop incoming trucks. A person waving two flares back and forth is a clear signal of distress and can be seen from a long ways off.

GPS units are under a hundred bucks now-a-days and give you the ability to communicate to others exactly where you are as well.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on something I've been wanting to keep in the truck for a while now, a back board. They're dual use off road - the obvious medical use as well as using it as a traction aid in sand/mud if you get stuck. They're about a hundred bucks.

I couldn't agree with you more! I have years of training (ski patrol for 6 years), survival, and practical experience and this has reminded me to step to another level. What I know may be a good baseline but nothing compared to what first responders do on highways.

I used to hate accident scenes cause I didn't know what to do. When you know - you can go into action and help the situation instead of doing nothing. I would encourage all of us to, at the very least, take an advanced first aid course through the American Red Cross.

I thought about calling in and ripping them a new one, but I'm not going to even bother. They aren't worth the effort. It was a tragic event and these people are just idiots.
