Not really. Just don't weld fully along the bottom. There is great drainage and ventilation on the outside of the frame.

I guess I wouldn't be so concerned about the drainage, but the weld and prepped area underneath not being coated and being exposed to moisture. Was just curious as I am getting ready to weld on a set of 4xinnovation sliders pretty soon.

Thanks, I feel like my welds would be solid. In past projects I have had good penetration and everything has held up thus far.

All the research I have seen everyone full welds the scab plates to the frame, I haven't seen just the plug welds done alone in this scenario. I think that was what you were suggesting in your first thought? Or even the plug welds plus the 2 - 1 inch welds per side.

I think I am going to scrap the hole drilling (that is if I don't go pick up a drill press between now and then  ) and choose to fully weld the scab plates to the frame, making sure to allow for cool down between welds on the same scab and alternate sides and such.

I'm a decent fabricator with many frame repairs done on Toyota Tacomas. I've always tried to maintain as close to factory conditions as possible. I want that frame to bend or collapse in an accident.

With that said, I have never welded on any sliders, but have looked at many done by others. I've always wondered if it was really necessary for all 4 sides of the scabs to be welded to the frame.

I know that heat stressed metal will bend sooner than unmolested frame material. This is why my OPINION is to not weld completely around the scab plate.

If this was a true race truck, my thoughts would be different.

I would guess that 99 percent of the people welding on sliders will never contact anything or jack up the truck via the sliders. Those 1 percenters are going to want to add additional gussets and supports.

These are my opinions only. I only have fabrication and frame repair experience to go by. I truly wish to be rebutted. I want to hear what others say.

You don't need the plug welds. I just installed a set of allpro sliders for a member and tehse were the first ive ever encountered with plug welds. I plugged them and welded the outside. Normally on my sliders its just a bent piece of 1/4" to wrap the frame. I do a 2" leg underneath and 4" along the sides. The 4" side I taper along the top so that its easier to weld around the whole plate as you'll find out a square plate is hard to get to the top unless the truck has a BL. Fitup will also be key to how well and easy the install goes. any gaps and the welds turn to poo. I like to weld the whole plate to elimate water getting and standing behind it. Ive developed a pattern that works for me when welding them on to not overheat any given area too much. I do one single pass and move to a different section of frame either same side or opposite side and basically just bounce corners

These were re work. The guy had these welded to the truck with no plates or even gussets. so I fabbed his plates and chopped it all off and started over. he will replace the frame before these welds give out

Odd job, and not really my thing.
Had to beef up / rebuild someone's version of art. Tusks from a wooly mammoth statue/art what ever. I guess it was at EDC and fell down. The tusks are 15' off the ground I am told.
What was brought to me was simply something that looked like it was done by a drunk child and unsafe to be over people's heads in public. I had 18 hours into 2 of these things. Today I received a giant spool of 3/16 wire rope that will now get wrapped around the entire thing. I guess it is headed to San Francisco, then burning man.
Some call it art, but when it ends up in my shop, I call your problem now mine.
    Cheers

The new gig does not pay well. $12.00 less per hour then I was making. But I like the people and the jobs are all different and plenty. I have been clicking 20 hours OT a week and could work more if I wanted . This past week I have been building lots if carts for the MGM hotel.
Next week I have 3 Mobil bars for the pool at the Venetion, and I have a big pergala for the palms pool area.
The company has a chef that cooks lunch everyday, that's nice, and they cover 2/3rds if my insurance. Lots if Arty type people. It's a hospitality type business. Everyone is nice .
The welder they gave me is a older Lincoln 215, don't really like it, but it is what I was givin. There is a syncrowave 250dx, but no aluminum jobs have come down yet, so I have not played with it yet.
    Anyway, cheersKIMG0813.jpg KIMG0812.jpg KIMG0820.jpg

I will post a pic of the tusks wrapped in the cable when they are done. That job has been put aside till next week.

If anyone is looking for work, we could use another fabricator. All the OT you can handle if you want. At the end of today I will be at 74 hours for this week.

Welded some 5/8 d ring onto 3/8 plate. Still no 7018 in the garage so I used 1/8 6011. Went nice and slow and it filled up nicely.

Starting and stopping is hard to make pretty still. The other side wasn’t as pretty and I tried to use it as a 7014 test and it just came out ugly af.

    Thank you sir!

Damn, wish this had popped up a couple months ago. Im mobile and was in that area for a couple of weeks! Sorry this doesn't help you much but I know there are ALOT of shops out there so it shouldn't be too hard to find someone reputable to glue those in for you!

Ight so ima stop you here.

Do not weld something that will be used as a pull point with XX10 Rods. You’re asking for trouble.

If these are just for coolers or something to be strapped down then rock on. But I would 10000% recommend just buying 5Lbs of 7018 and using those to weld on anything structural that will be tested.

Will 60 work? Sure. But it’s risky. Especially with a new welder welding them considering 60 can look slick but crack like nothing.
