That's exactly why I was posting. Theirs is a good option as well, but requires you to drill a hole.

I came here via the other thread, both great ideas! I like the adjustability of the chain system. Btw, the load limit of 1/4" grade 30 (weakest grade available) chain is 1300 lb. single leg.
X2 =2600lb. Probably break the Taco before you ever broke the chain...
Thanks OP for this great & economical idea!

Gonna try this today on my 3rd gen. I assume it would work the same, hopefully. This will be perfect for having my kayak in my bed.

Thanks OP !! This is exactly what I was looking for. I was debating on another idea but this is cost less.

Ha! Great idea and something I'm going to do.

But, this is from 2 years ago - I wonder how many other great ideas have flow under my radar? Must spend more time on TW

Tip: If you adjust the cables to have the top of the tail gate be on the same plane as the top of the wheel wells, you could have another supporting point for drywall. Especially for the shortbed folks.

Anybody have a picture of their tailgate? I'm wondering how you are attaching the cable to the tailgate itself. I don't really see it staying clipped on too well with mine. Maybe 3rd gens are different.
    Heres what mine looks like.

It doesn’t clip on like your thinking. Look at the oem bar that latches the tailgate in the 1st pic with the chain links attached a few inches above the oem cables. It is a 1/4” bar. The 1/4” chain links snap into the latches just like the tailgate does when closed.

Make sure you hear the TWO CLICKS as the latch clasps the chain or you won't have it fully secured.......!

What about the tailgate accidentally unhinging itself while around the 45° zone? I would highly consider the anti-theft tailgate mod before setting this up, know what I mean?

Very clever! I'll be making a set for my truck. I already have the materials, including genuine 'biners to use that don't have the "Not for climbing use..." warning. lol I suggest adding one to secure the loose end of the chain that hangs slack so you can click it to one of the links on the working end to stow it.

This is a great idea, thanks for the pictures. I hadn't seen this before but opens up some maybe creative possibilities for better hauling my 9 ft kayak in the short bed. Will definitely be experimenting with something simple like this!
