Black PreRunner fender flares

All i did was sand mine a bit then i sprayed them with black paint dont know what type?

 

I just did mine yesterday. I have an '03 Prerunner. I broke a couple of the mounting clips in removal, but there were enough unbroken pieces to allow for a smooth mounting back on the fenders. Just take your time when pulling the flares off, or better yet, go to the dealer and get a handful of replacement retainer clips.

I used Rustoleum Truck Bed Liner on mine. I was going to use some SEM Trim Paint, but decided that I didn't want to have to worry about re-doing this at any point in the future. Also, there were minor scrapes, scuffs, and gouges in mine from 7 years of road use. The truck bed liner is so forgiving that it goes right over all those imperfections, completely erasing them from view and also you don't have to be a pro painter to get a good even finish.

The trick to using this product is to spray it about 3' away from the flares. It will make the medium go on in a very smooth, matte, tacky manner. If you get too close to the flares with this stuff while spraying it, you will end up with a rubbery look. Maybe that's what you're after though, so either way you'll know what it will end up like.

I use turtle wax ice on mine. It's easy to apply and take off.

Maguires Tire shine. I rub it on the flares every time I put in on the wheels. Brings the flares back to a nice black color and no fading so far.

When you spray it in smooth sweeping motions, side to side, with the can about 2-3' away from the fender, you get a very smooth and matte finish. The stippling, or texture, comes out very fine which is nice. It's not overwhelmingly noticeable like rhino liner or something of that nature. it looks almost factory, but with a bit of texture that won't crack or fade over time.

If you want the liner to go on more rubbery, just spray it on closer and it will come out more like textured plasti-dip.

I took the flares off the truck and used some dish soap and a good semi-abrasive sponge to clean them up before painting. Then let them dry in the sun for a few minutes. For the rubber trim, I just used some painters tape and folded them under, taping it to the under side of the flares. No need to remove them from the flares.

The bed liner is very forgiving, so all those scratches, nicks, and gouges will disappear!

The product itself is absolutely great. The only problem I have had with it is that 2/5 cans would not spray right side up. I had to hold the cans upside down to get them to spray. This makes getting an even coat a bit tricky, but still doable.

I have also used the duplicolor truck bed liner spray. The product isnt as good as the Rustoleum, but I never had any problems with the cans. go figure...

Haha, thanks man. It's really no big deal. With a little patience and good prep, anyone can get the same results. That's the great thing about the sprayable truck bed liner.

How to take off the clips?

 

Well first unscrew all the screws inside the fender well. Then start pulling the flares off from one side. Stick your fingers in under the flares and gently pry them off. It's more than likely you'll break some. That's why I said it would be wise to just go ahead and buy some spares before you start.
