What’s the specs on your coilover springs again? I’m gonna get a arb bumper, tryin to figure everything out,

    Right now I’m 2 3/4” preload with stock 14”? 600lb springs

Would like to have 1” or less preload an same or lil more ride height

Tryin to figure if I need to up spring rate for bumper/winch?

Also curious if anyone running 16” long spring?

I would call accutune and see what they say. I have revalved my shocks, and have 14" 700s but I would say the most I would go are 14" 650's for our tacomas...you can go 700, but know youre gonna open em up immediately to change the shim stack...

Not that this questions was directed to me, but I'll add anyway. What shocks are you running?

If you are planning on adding a bumper/winch to a 1st gen I'd still only go 14" 650lb springs. Tim is running 700#s and has a lot of weight, but the 1st gens are smaller/lighter overall so I'd like to see what his truck does with 650# springs. Unless you like a little stiffer ride? A lot of this is preference.

Does anyone know what the motion ratio is for a 1st gen Taco?

Not sure what the motion rate is but My truck weighs about 4500 ish...pretty sure there is a math equation lurking around to answer your question

And yeah I wouldnt recommend people get 700#ers...better to go 650 and stiffen compression if need be. I too would like to see what 650's feel like

I would say, armor up, drive it with the shocks the way they are and see how it feels. Then change from there. If its not giving you the ride height youre looking for, up the spring rate. If you get your ride height set and the shocks feel to soft ie blowing through your preload, revalve the compression. Then consider rebound if your rebound feels off...

Edit: you can always call fox and get a suggested shim stack to stiffen compression or rebound...talk to them, they will be a solid source for shim stack recs, or accutune.

Shane means Motion ratio, As in the front shock shaft cycles 4" but the wheel actually travels 8".
I imagine it should be similar to the 2nd gens, around a 2:1 ratio.

So its been a hot minute since I posted anything so Im gonna just do a massive photo dump of the last two weeks I spent up in the western sierras. I had to do some work on the cabin so couldnt get out everyday and with all the family in town I had other obligations, so no camping unfortunately. But gonna go back in August before hiking Dusy Basin, so I should get some wheeling n camping in then.

First day trip was to an old trestle for logging back in the day and stopped being used in the 50's. It eventually came down in an earthquake in '98. Still super cool to check out and a great discovery that spring is 6 weeks late in the mtns.

Not a bad spot to have lunch and pretty surprised to see the amount of water in the creek.

My pops was geeking out on the flowers and was stoked that the california wild azaleas were still blooming

I ended up trying to take another trail a day or two later and the gate was locked, later to find out the road had washed out this year, so maybe later but still some awesome views and a couple small aspen groves.

Out of all the times Ive headed up here I never see mules ear bloom, but its all over right now. And this is nothing to some of the meadows I saw later in the trip. Still pretty cool though

The next day my pops n I headed up to the pass, hoping to hit a trail that lead to a high sierra lake but there is still a ton of snow, and ended up recovering a jeep on the way out. I didn't want to embarrass him by snapping photos of his mistake. He got high centered on a patch of snow trying for a photo op, instead him and his girl got more than they bargained for. Scouted a tom of good camping spots though.

I talked my cousin's son into coming out with me and we hit up some new trails to me, and had a blast. He has never been out wheeling and was glad to get him out side. He was pretty stoked and I got to get him a bit nervous in a sketchy situation on a trail that was super steep n rocky. It was blocked by downed trees on the steepest section and had to back down quite a bit before turning around. But we went back up to another area after and had an awesome view for lunch. We also found a killer meadow with a collapsed cabin that looks like it used to be used as a place to let cattle graze.

Last day I got out was pretty awesome. Got to spend the day with one of my cousins from Tennessee and his son, my godson. We went up to the Benett Juniper, not a tough trail to get there at all, but the place is littered with amazing offshoots that vary in difficulty. The place is also packed with amazing old growth juniper trees and the Benett juniper is over 6000 years old. We decided to see if we could get to the end of the road and unfortunately were stopped by lots of snow and had to turn around, but we got some great shots before leaving and found some killer camping spots. The trail got pretty fun in the end and definitely wasnt for the faint of heart. Wish I got more pics but my godson was getting tired and stopping all the time for photos was not on the to do list for him.

Not a bad spot for lunch, though to many bugs for a possible camp site. Still pretty though.

This is just before a cool water crossing and where I actually had to put it in 4 low as the creek is pretty rocky and has a steep entry/exit. This was really the beginning of the end of the trail. You can see the ridge with all the snow was our goal.

I got my bumper on gonna get stiffer springs, you said you think 700 are to stiff? You think your valving has anything to do with that opinion?

Tryin to figure best spring rate, don’t want to stiff/harsh, but want least preload,

I have not messed with valving, an don’t think I will seems pretty good imo

Getting a good ride is 50/50 spring rate and valving. Don't mess with one too much to compensate for lack of another. Also varies per vehicle because each generation GVRW is vastly different.

Theyre too stiff with stock valving is what shane is getting at. I revalved and changed the psi in my shocks as well as added reservoirs. I would see where your ride height is. If youre not getting the right lift, i would suggest going 14" 650's and see how that helps, then decide if you want to tune your shocks. I have done a lot of work to make the 700s ride well for my truck. Essentially I changed my valving and shocks three times in 6 months. It is expensive to do if you dont have the tools for it. So yes valving did play a factor, but so did the spring rate. You may not need to adjust valving with the longer 650's

No, not what I'm saying. If you didn't already have 700# springs we would have gone 14" 650lb on yours too and add more compression valving to increase dampening. There are far too many variables to make a generic statement and a lot of it is preference. You have a stupidly heavy 1st gen though so there's always that.

Its not as heavy compared to others with similar set ups, but you're saying exactly what i just recommended. We both agree shock tunning should be done in baby steps otherwise you may not know what changes truly helped or not. Plated bumpers are heavy, same with winches, but thats not where most my heavy weight is on the truck. After finding my weight its really not that bad, its just where my weight is that ensures its not a desert racer
