Hi everyone! New to the board, and just wanted to know what the best way to re-paint the 4x4 lettering on my mud flaps would be? Thank you!

:sawzall: Cut them off just above the 4X4. Then you can sit at the table with the cool kids.

I would probably get stencils and spray paint them.

I used a scrub sponge and simply took the fading white off the letters and all black no worries.
As for removing or cutting they do flex/bend in rocks/branches and keep mud and salty crap from being thrown up on the rear frame area and tow hitch.

Bought a $3.50 Sharpie Paint Pen at Walmart. (Oil based paint). Here are the results - still drying. IMG_20190825_0941165.jpg IMG_20190825_0941213.jpg

I think the Sharpie is a much easier way to go than masking and painting.

I thought about touching it up; tire cleaner spray I used in a car wash (applied with old toothbrush) actually seemed to kinda remove a bit unfortunately, so I stopped. Bleche White from an auto parts store, that I also use on tires before coating them with 303 for a matte finish

ended up ordering RokBlokz because the flaps were dry and there wasn't much to touch up anymore at this point (half the flaps were missing somehow)

I wonder if it would benefit from clear coat

    I re-painted flap,mask off 4WD,
When dry ,pulled off masking and used universal white touch up paint from auto parts store, then clear coat to seal

I just replaced my rear 4x4 mudflaps. I have tried painting lettering before in the past and it looks pretty bad in my opinion so it isn't something I would do unless the mudflaps are no longer available new. For the 2nd gens, they still are so buying new ones was the easiest option for me.

Second on the earlier post on Sharpie Pen. The one near the exhaust outlet on mine was faded. I removed both of them, cleaned them and removed the old paint with alcohol and re-painted them with the Sharpie by hand. They came out very good and after the first couple of rain storms they looked factory-perfect and you couldn't see the "brush-strokes". That was a couple of years ago and they still look pretty good.

Certainly some sort of vinyl. For my time and money, this was the easiest and most straight forward option.

Do they cover the letters perfectly?

The correct way is get 35's, HC rear, no way to mount flaps, then figure out how to mount flaps with a chain.

Then either a stencil for custom 4x4, or none at all
because it does not matter, and is assumed the vehicle is 4x4
