I think the "mod" is to sand it smooth then season it ;)

It's a manufacturing method that Lodge does. The process for seasoning a smooth pan takes a lot longer than something bumpy so Lodge deliberately makes theirs like that so that way the seasoning process during manufacturing is a lot faster and they can produce a larger volume ready for sale. At least that's the reason that I've seen some others on youtube talk about.

That's what I plan to do. I'm going to get a tub and vinegar at target friday and let that go overnight and then hit it with a wire drill saturday. In the mean time, they're no longer being stored outside in the rain we've been having here in the bay anymore.

I think they have great potential. The markings are still pretty good, keep us posted on the progress

Can do! I'm a little curious about the number 6 skillet mostly since it's pretty bad and I can't quite date that one as readily. The bigger one I would say is sometime between 1924 and 1940.

The older Griswold and Wagners are smooth and considerably lighter than the current Lodge pans. I'm not sure as to why the Lodge are speckled I think it has something to do with the casting process they use or maybe what czach said above. I've never ground mine down and they work just fine but I know many people do. I mostly use my Lodge skillet and Dutch Oven for camping as "beaters" so I never bothered. They work quite well. You can go either way, if you don't grind'em down the speckles will smooth and kind of fill in over time with use. Don't over think this too much. The nice thing about cast iron is it's pretty bomber so you can abuse it however you like for the most part and it will survive, if you ef it up scrub and clean with soap and start fresh.

Looks like you've got your work cut out for you. Stoked to see how the finished product turns out after restoration!

    VINEGAR.
Be careful that you do not remove metal.
(Ask me how I know that)

I personally prefer Apple Cider Vinegar.

Did you know some vinegar is made from petroleum???

So pans went into the vinegar bath last night and this morning, I was amazed to see on the No 8 skillet bare iron through the rust already. They've both had a preliminary working down with a Nylox and a S/S wire brush and they are starting to look like actual pans again.

They'll soak for a little longer, but I might have to wait until Monday to finish up if it does rain tomorrow.

The no 8 cleans up real nice. It's in the oven baking it's first coat as we speak.

The number 8 in the back with three coats and the number six as bare as I could get it. Right now, they're getting their final and second coats respectively.
