    Hey all,

May be a very silly question, but if I can avoid spending the extra money then it will help me out greatly. I have left over spectre performance air filter oil from when I had my 1997 ram (before it was stolen, used to run drugs for 3 weeks, and burned to the ground; yikes). I was wondering when I get around to cleaning my K & N drop-in filter, can I use the spectre oil to re-oil the filter? It is not brand specific, correct?

    Thanks!

A can of K&N oil is like $10.

I mean, you're "probably" fine, but not knowing the difference in the porosity of the filter materials, and the viscosity and other factors of the oils, I'd just buy the K&N stuff...

AH, okay. Hate to say it but I hadn't even checked the price of the oil yet; just assumed I could save some $$ if possible. At 10 bones it's definitely not worth the risk then, if like you stated the viscosity of the oil may be different. I still have a good amount to go until it needs a cleaning, I just noticed I still had the bottle leftover. Thanks for your help!

If you dunk it in oil, yeah probably.

I've never had a problem with my MAF when following the directions.

I've got ~120k miles on mine and have had to clean the MAF once, and it wasn't oily...

Was about to ask how light of a layer I should do if that's the case. I have seen many people on here complaining about it, but with my Ram it never had an issue with the oil. Although, doubt it had a MAF. I usually would do a thin layer on both sides with the other filter, would that be appropriate in this case as well, then?

The instructions just say to apply a thin coat on each pleat (1 side) with the sprayer 3" away, let it dry for ~20 minutes, then re-spray any white spots. I'm sure K&N has posted a video of the proper technique.

With my "cold air" intake, good luck getting a thin even coat on the inside of the cone filter...

I have a K&N on my dirtbike too, and this is how I've done it. I've ridden that thing in some really damn dusty conditions, and the inside has always been perfectly clean.

Lightly oil it (one smooth solid pass) and get a paper towel to soak up the extra. I still use KN filter and haven’t had a problem yet.

OEM filter are just fibers. KN has the fibers and oil so I would think even if you didn’t put enough oil on the KN you still would be fine. You also have the engine oil and filter to do the job.

I bought the K&N cleaning kit for my filter. The spray degreaser runs out much quicker then the oil (you only need a very light spray so it should last a long time). I just use Simple Green to clean the filter now and it works fine. Never seen any oil on my MAF...
