Depends what it sounds like. How are your shifts, are they all smooth?

How fast are you going? These trucks like to make rear diff harmonic noise between 50 and 60 when on and off the throttle.

Seeing that you got a 2016, I would have hoped you got the TSB. Since I did a burnout in 2nd gear a couple of times when I was racing (Pretty funny tbh, I shifted too quick for a car with truck gearing). So I couldn’t say the truck doesn’t get up and going. In terms of smoothness, it took me a couple months of getting it down. After 6 months, it’s second nature. Pretty smooth truck. Granted, it’s easier to drive a mustang or STI than my truck but there’s no other vehicle I would rather drive than mine. But uphill? Just throw smoothness out the window. (Mainly 1st to 2nd)

1st to 2nd in any truck is all ways a gap. Not exclusive to Tacomas.

You’re probably right. I never drove in a manual pickup before. My uncle recently got a 2000-2004 tacoma with a manual and Im really excited to drive that. V6 not I4

Yup. I've owned personal trucks all my life and worked out of big trucks for work all the same. Speed has never really been the reason to go with a manual in the recent truck world if you're looking at 1/4 mile times. Real world, it's less noticable.

What kills me is folks that are upset about power . I don't click 4th gear merging onto the highway until 55ish. They're tall engines. Not saying the truck is fast by any means. But unlike quarterback keyboard wailers, I've done pulls side by side with my buddy in his second gen and the results were clear.

I could have gotten a sports car, but I chose not to. I wanted a tacoma because that’s basically what i grew up with (my dad has a 03 that he got brand new, 16 years ago). My taco is pretty fast for what I was used to. But if there’s ways to make it faster, I’ll take it. Like for me, I want to make the truck faster. In a way that I enjoy, bcuz ultimately, I love my truck and it’s fast enough for me. But like you offroaders, this is my way of spending money. I dont rock crawl so I dont need a lift or offroad tires. I’ll definitely take big mama blue through some snow and maybe some dirt. But no rocks

Stated differently, under 4k it has zero torque and is useless. I regret going from 2nd gen to 3rd.

    this and that...
ive had two 2nd gens (08 xrunner, 13 trd OR) and one 3rd gen (19 trd sport). i bought all of em brand new, so clean slate and all that. i cant really say that i feel all that much of a difference so far but atleast to me it seems like the 3rd gen feels more...softer; almost car like. sorry if it doesnt make sense, it does in my head! lol. i dont even mean that in a bad way at all either. i like the way this new truck drives. all three iterations had short shift kits with weighted shiftknobs for a more...precise driving experience. my 08 xrunner had the coupe (xru member) special which consisted of his reformulated trd short shift kit. i coupled that with a razo 400g shift knob. coupes trd shift kit is the bomb digz and recommend his services if hes even still in the game. gave the xrunner a very enjoyable driving experience. for my 13 OR i had a modified trd shift kit cause i went a little overboard and lifted this badboy 10"; not functional..at...all so i just threw a basic trd gray ball 6spd shift knob to collaborate. out of all the tacomas ive owned this was the least desired driving experience because of the route i took. it did look good though and that was enough because of the build i was going for at the time lol. for this new rig i wanted to go back to that fun sport truck dynamic like i had with the xrunner. i noticed that trd did not offer a shift kit for this new gen so i opted for core shifters own modified hurst kit. i have a few weighted knobs i collected over the years, but currently it has a perrin 453g brz knob i have to tell you now that this kit is bad ass. it replaces the whole shifter assembly and it makes this truck notchy as hell. the dude chris who runs core is super knowledgeable and can answer any technical question you pose pertaining to his kit. i look forward to everytime i drive this truck now. its much more inline to the xrunner characteristic i was aiming for. did i answer your question? probably not but i figure i tell you a story from my driving experiences from 2nd to 3rd gen.

Stop looking at your mpg and tach and drive the thing like a fucking Civic. The truck has plenty of power and shifts much easier at higher rpms. Keep your torque up and it's smooth as butter. If it's falling flat or bogs gears, you ain't in the right RPM range.

Well. I recently bought a simple 17 foot Bowrider boat with a 4 banger. A little ski/sport boat.

The Tacoma can't pull it up the ramp unless I'm in 4low. In 2/4high it requires an unreal amount of clutch slip. I tried to get it going, and even with it floored, bull the top of the ramp it was bogging and trying to stall...

Zero torque. So now I get to blow my front drive axles trying to make the turn on the ramp in 4low.

On the plus side... 4low atrac.... I was the smallest truck at the ramp and the ONLY truck that didn't spin tire or anything... So there is that.

People were commenting on how well it did, even with the mud terrains on the known slippery and wet ramp.

Sorry if this had been covered. I have gotten used to a new jetta, so when I jumped back into my truck I feels rougher than I remember, but I'm probably imaging it. Whats most concerning is at high RPMs, the clutch pedal feels a bit gritty. Really, just a bit. Is that the normal ruggedness of the truck or do i have a problem? I'm not getting any noise from the throw out bearing but that doesn't mean its ok. Also, side note, does yalls ac compressor kick on and off of your not on full blast?

I was thinking of a 6 speed 3rd gen .. i have a 2nd gen and first gear is useless. Does the 5 speed start at a lower ratio?
