So today I went out and extended my AC drain pipe to flow straight to the ground to prep that frame area for sanding and paint. I'm using vinyl hose but I'll swap to some rubber fuel line when I can get some later. While I was back there I noticed a large oil leak. My valve cover gaskets have failed with this hot weather and leaked all down the back of my engine. I also have a collection of oil at the bottom of the bell housing but I can follow the trail of oil down from the valve covers. So I don't think it's my new rear main seal. Fingers crossed there.

I have a set of valve covers from my 4Runner with a 300K engine. Should I prep those for paint and have them ready to go painted when I do this job? Or use mine and have the truck out for an extra day. I have a case of Dupli-color red engine enamel. Would 300K mile valve covers be something to worry about?

I only had about 25k on my fully rebuilt engine before the rear of the valve covers started to weep oil. I took it back and they replaced the gaskets, those half-moon pieces and such, re-torqued the studs and seems to be ok so far ~5k later... Whatever you do, just keep an eye on things as time goes on. Even the best work (or "best") may result in not optimal results.

the only use for a 16'' travel coilover would be for rear linking the truck. Which is a huge custom thing involving a lot of cutting and welding and almost makes the truck not a truck. Its a race truck move. Not that you can't do links and keep a bed but its not super easy.

Bypasses can go in the front or the rear.

I'd suggest doing a lot of reading on suspensions and long travel if that's what you're going for. There is a ton of good info out there.

Ya i understand the links in the back just the size i was confused of... so 16 are only for the back in case of links which connect to a bed cage i seen etc but thats the size that we as a 1st gen infront coilover size should use? 8in? I'm guessing? I plan to go do coilovers & a bypass infront since the LT i'm looking at has two attachments for them

Nothing or everything. All perspective and what you want out of the truck.

Thats a custom 4 link setup. Means you can haul major ass through rough terrain though. But higher maintenance. Very much race truck. And not really a DD sort of thing. JD might DD this thing though ha

There are other ways of doing it. 3 link. 3 link wishbone. Lots of ways to do links and keep the bed too with some trick engineering.

front standard kits use a short body 8'' travel shock. Race kits sometimes use a 10'' with custom front hoops.

A lot of kits spec specific shocks so depending on the kit you'll want to ask them what shocks they used.

I suggest spending a lot of time reading the Long Travel thread. I'm not sure you are prepared for what rabbit hole you are about to go down. Unless you have unlimited funds and can just pay the right person to find, guide you what to buy and install it for you.

I wouldn't worry about high mileage covers as long as they are clean and not all gunked up or something. I bought a used set with unknown mileage after I cracked mine and they have been junk fine.

My Chevy's are nice and soft. No complaints. I'd never want stock suspension ever again.
