1600.00 dollars for compass/temp? really? damn I guess I won't attempt to put one in my 2010...... That's outrageous for a simple piece of electronics that looks to be having reliability problems..... My first Tacoma..... ???

You could try a solder with some silver in it.

Thanks to everyone who posted information on this fix. There was no visible damage to the connections on the 510 resistors, but I heated them up and added a little fresh solder just for the heck of it. Put it back together and pushed the button and it works again. With no experience soldering electronics, I was a little wary but it worked.
    Thanks!

Any close up pictures of the metal clips? Mine evidentally are bent or something because when I push the console back up in and it pops in place, the front droops down. I tried about every different orientation and have been bending the clips back out into place to match the pictures in this tutorial, but nothing is working.

    Ya think there's something wrong...???
Maybe it's time to leak it to the Press...!!!
    More bad PR for Toyota.
If it's not a Safety issue, Toyota will not address it,

Has anyone had any problems with the temp gauge not reading accurate after this fix? I've had to fix mine 2-3 times in the past year (due to my crappy soldering job...but I'm getting better). Since the last time I fixed it (last week), it's usually been +/- 10 degrees.

I applied this fix a few months ago and it worked fine for a while. I took the compass out again and now I see the small "burn" in the display component. To make matter worse, I seemed to have lost the two clips that hold the front of the console up.
Anybody know where I can get a replacement temp/compass unit short of the dealer?

The burn on the display is nothing to worry about.

It would be cheaper to mount a GPS unit there!

One of my clips is missing, anybody have a source for the clips?

The actual thermometer is in front of the radiator and uses the same wiring harness as the horns. You could be getting heat from the radiator when you're not moving. Put an accurate thermometer near the sensor to see if it's off. I don't know if it can be calibrated, don't remember anything in the user's manual.
