Happy to see more activity on this thread. You’d think this would have constant activity but it always dies out for months at a time.

I don't know why but I don't always receive notifications from "threads I watch" and I ultimately just lose track of them.

What detergent is best for a white gi that’s looking a little dirty? They’re embroidered so I don’t want to use bleach. My regular Gain is not getting them clean enough though.

I've heard white vinegar helps with stains and stank.

Oxyclean is excellent at cleaning them. Usually 1-1 dilution w/ water works for me. Also I always use tide sport febreeze detergent to keep things fresh.

Testing is coming from the TKD/karate school systems. Basically to get more money from students. I got all my belts up to current brown w/o tests

I never tested for a belt until black belt, also have never paid for a belt. As such I don’t believe in paying for any promotion. And hope yall aren’t.
Grandmaster Flávio Behring started making our association test for black belt under a panel including himself to ensure the association wasn’t being “watered down”. I fell into that, it was the most nervous I have ever been. Ever!

I really like the idea of no stripes.
Belts in general are weird to me. But they do serve a limited purpose, even if it’s just to keep people motivated or have a goal to reach. The no stripes to me is a great balance.

Where I train we do stripes. There’s a set of standards in terms of knowledge for blue belt.
Three submissions from side control. three submissions from guard. three sweeps from guard.three escapes from side control. three submissions from back control. Etc etc.
As well as a good understanding of “self defense” type moves. But we don’t make a big deal of the “Blue belt test” in front of the class. it’s pretty much a little private thing with you and the coach.

It’s hardly a test to be honest. Not a lot of pressure. He just make sure that you have certain knowledge on positions and verbiage

I could give a shit about stripes but I think they are good for a lot of people. They help keep guys motivated that might otherwise become unmotivated and also help a guy know where he is on his journey. If you’ve been around BJJ long enough you have seen the guy who flys through belts and deserves every one of them and then there is the average guy spending years and then there are guys that progress even slower taking more years. Im motivated and I’m a grinder so stripes or no stripes I will be putting in time on the mat.
