i was a big fan of C&C. i may have to pick this bad boy up. here's the deal though. i'm moving out into the country and i have to deal with DSL. the absolute highest speed i can get is 1.5mb. will i be able to play online or is that a complete waste of time with such low speeds?

Wow I came into this late, lol.

I have a buddy that got selected to be a tester 2 weeks before it came out. He has two free passes for 2 weeks of gameplay and he can't even give them away, lol. People either don't know what SC is or they don't care ...or like me don't have a good computer to run it on.

I was a C&C fanatic for over a decade. After Tiberium wars they sold the franchise to somebody else and its ruined now.

The subject of DIII, we have a customer that's a WoW developer at Bliz and one of his best friends is a dev for DIII. They are VERY tight lipped on that because they mainly want to concentrate on SC and WoW to keep the active cash cows running. DIII is officially on back burner status.

Now me ...I am officially an EVE addict these days. So much so that I roasted my computer playing it, lol. Now I gotta deal with major withdrawals until I can get a new computer and resubscribe. EVE changed everything for me game wise.

...ok thread jack over. If anyone is interested in those two week passes let me know and I'll see if he still has them.

Extremely steep learning curve. Hard to get into at first but worth it if you give it some time. Very team oriented, graphically intensive like a mofo though. All ships, no person to person interaction. Just a pic of your character in your bio (its supposed to be your pilots license pic). Everybody talks through chat windows. Pretty much the best space sim out there. It has its short comings but those are mainly only a problem for the guys that have been playing for-EVER (it's been out for 7 years now). Those guys get to the point where the only thing they enjoy doing anymore is giant fleet battles and the servers have been having problems with lag for a few months now. Never affects me when I'm playing.

Great graphics though, cool soundtrack, tons of stuff to do once you get into and start to understand it. Can only play online though. You download the client and can play for 2 weeks free. If you have a paid subscription and let it run out, you can't log on and use the program so its all based on actually being logged into the servers. But come on ...$15 bucks for what ya get is a heluva deal compared to games like WoW, IMHO (which btw costs $30 a month and you have pay for the expansions). Expansions are free and come out every 6 months. Plus, if you unsubscribe, even for years at a time, they will store your character data and if you decide, say, 2 years later to come back, your character is still intact, your ship or ships and all your other crap is still where ya left it, intact, ready to go. Can't beat that.

It's not for everybody but I love it and miss the hell out of it right now

There's a lot of good gameplay example vids on youtube if you look it up.

Been around since about 2003 and they have slowly developed more of it and made more areas of space available for the guys that like to live way out on the edges of known space ...ok I'm gonna start to get really nerdy sounding here, lol.

    Basically, a newbie starts out in a secure area of space where if you get "ganked' by somebody for no legit reason, an invincible police force will come and blow up their ship. But the police are there to punish you, not protect you. So imagine a police force that will watch you get robbed and beat down, then as the criminal starts to run off, they step in and say;

"Ok, you are now a criminal. This guy has 30 days to kick your ass without repercussion from us, but you can still take his stuff. It's up to him to get it back. Meanwhile, we're taking your car so you have to walk home and you won't be able to come back to this part of town again until you do something good for the community to make up for it."

There are different areas of space with different security levels, from 0.0 (free range, no rules) to 1.0 (high sec, cops or local navy step in if crimes happen). 0.0 has HUGE player controlled areas where giant alliances of multiple player corporations (like guilds in WoW) battle for sovereignty of an area they declare to be theirs. .1-.4 space is considered low sec and full of pirates that are basically the nerds that got their asses kicked as kids and do whatever they can to grief other players for the helluvit. High sec (.5-1.0) is settled space run by the NPC empires in the game. Bad shit can still happen but the cops or navy will punish the bad guys after the fact.

There's way more to explain for anyone interested but I don't wanna thread jack further here, lol. Star Craft is something I always wanted to get into. EVE just came along and kinda stole me away from everything else ...and now I can't play it! It is VERY involved once you get into it. If it starts to swallow your life you just back off, take a break, and unsubscribe for a while. ...or your computer dies and you're stuck with a crappy laptop like me.

    System requirements here

Honestly, besides not fully showing the full potential of the graphics side of it, I ran it fine for 6 months on a Win XP Pro 32-bit, with a 2.8Ghz Intel DuoCore, 2Gigs of RAM, some cheap NVidia AGP video card, etc. Really makes a difference if you have a slow internet connection though. The graphics are all streaming from the server since you are actively logged in and playing in one giant, single shard universe. Every one can run into everyone. No separate shard servers to have to cross over to to meet up with other players.

My computer was just getting old and I hadn't been checking underneath the fan and heatsink and dust built up slowly in there and overheated my system one night. I kept thinking "Bad aspiring IT professional, BAD!"

Edit: Despite what it says under system requirements about a DVD reader, you can download the client online and just pay a licensing fee after 2 weeks. No DVD required. And it says geforce 8 series and up cards but I was running it on a 6 series.

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.
The name of the game these days is Starcraft II. yay :D

I still prefer Dawn of War (DOW) and to a lesser extent DOW2... more races and cooler theme... I do play Starcraft but I usually just cheat and play the AI.

Units are too fragile and take too long to build. DOW is sick because of a multitude of race (up to 7 vs SC2's 3)... plus each unit can take some damage and are built in squads vs single unit

Well in SC2 they set it up (like wow) for downloadable expansions so they can add a race or units so the gameplay can change.

    I just got it!
I had the Starcraft 2 beta until launch. I played it religiously. But then obviously when the game came out you couldn't play the beta anymore, and I haven't bought the game yet haha.

But honestly, it's sooo good. SO good. All the new units are kick ass, too. I urge everyone in the world to try it out.

Starcraft 2 is almost a completely different genre to DOW. It's like closer, more personal combat. You're not fighting armies of 3000. You're fighting little battalions of 20. It's more intense, you can accurately control what each and every unit is doing at all times and it creates a more intimate experience. I don't really get into DOW. It's too lifeless. Starcraft to connects you to each and every unit. It's just crazy, okay? It's juuuust crazy.

I like DOW because the units can take some damage... the SC2 units are weak, how the hell does the Thor unit get destroyed in two shots from a hydralisk...

All the units are way too weak and take WAY too long to build I find my self watching tv waiting for unit to be built.

In DOW units blast out of the build process and bring the hurt to other units but a punishment sponges.

In SC2 the units strengths are not related... you'd think siege tanks would last longer against zerglings. In DOW predator tanks can take huge amounts of small arms punishment just like a real tank. Or the Baneblade... seriously. Even the individual Squads of Marines.

Its just that in SC2 you spend all this time building units to get wiped out but a couple other units.

In DOW you can field intense specialized units and have close quarters combat and intense battle whereas SC2 you spend all your damn time managing resources

I played starcraft a whole lot back in the day. I remember playing more of the use map settings games then actual basic starcraft.

I "aquired" a copy of SC2 that can play the campaign, and have played the first 6-7 missions. It's pretty good.. nothing mind blowing IMO. Based off all the hype I expected a lot more, but maybe all the hype is based around the multiplayer?

Dude SC2 IS ALL ABOUT THE MULTIPLAYER. The campaign is just a bonus.
I am happy that they changed the campaign and made it more than build and kill the enemy. they throw is some good twists and scenarios. Best part is it is left open for more to come!

damn it! after you described it i really wanted to try it. i use to love "Privateer" back in the day. it was a big open space and you could be law abiding or a smuggler or pirate or mercenary. i liked it cause you didn't have to choose one of those things, your actions just kinda dictate what you became. unfortunately i'm moving to a remote area where 1.5 mb dsl is the only internet option available so i dont think i can try it. that blows, it seemed kinda cool.
