Sometimes when you buy parts online it will ask for the VIN #, some will also say if you don't know it just enter your License plate number instead, seems quite a bit of info can come from it.

Boy if I had a nickel for every time this thread was created word for word...as if OP had a breakthrough in logic.

You SHOULD obscure plates because pussies get butthurt on this forum and take it too far. Because they’re sensitive.

I personally call in Amber Alerts on every tacoma where the license plate number is legible.

    This.

Here is an example of how the internet can find you, when you think you can’t be found.

Fwiw. There have been a few cases where people posted photos or videos of being places or doing things they shouldn't have, knowing or not, and had regulatory officials find the individual and fine them, all from pulling license plate info.

I know this is a s*tpost thread but...

It's about data correlation. When driving past a truck on the highway, knowing their license plate # doesn't reveal anything. Taking a license plate and associating it with an online account instantly correlates the data. That license plate now ties to a person, and a social circle, and pattern of activity.

It's why they ask for your zip code (postal code for you non-American-types) at checkout of stores. Zip codes aren't private either, but tying your identity to a geographic zone has a measurable monetary value, blah blah blah.

I just do it because it's easy and kinda fun. I also just like coloring.

Why aren't you using your real name on your postings?

As for law enforcement running plates for non-official business it happens regularly. When caught around here, they have to stand in the corner for a minute.

Been discussed ad nauseam. Different opinions and degrees of concern. Me... meh, I don't bother covering plates in posted pictures for reasons already articulated. Others do obscure as they apparently fall into the more concerned (cleaned that up from paranoid) group which is fine with me.

I've got no issue with my name. It's everywhere. My actual name is part of the email address which I use for just about everything.

By chance, do you happen to have a model number on that light bar bracket? I know NFab used to make one with the tabs but I haven't found one yet for a third gen!

There was a guy on here 6-8 months ago who took a picture of himself crossing a road closed sign to fish. Within about 30 minutes I was able to read a lot about him on this site even though he was deleting all of his social media profiles as fast as he could. He brought it on himself, but it was definitely eye opening about how much information could be blasted out there in a short amount of time based on a little detective work, including his plate.
