Well, if we're pulling out the rulers and comparing... Excel chops... I was awarded the coveted Excel Tiara in my office for my expertise, mostly just because I know about vlookup, lol

Anywho, my point wasn't that tire weight doesn't make a difference, obviously it does. I was only pointing out one of things that helped me decide to go with an E rated 255, vs. a 285 (tire traction/performance and lack of fender trimming being the others).

In the end, IMO having never gotten a flat is well worth the price of admission for lugging around a slightly heavier tire. You may feel comfortable going on the journeys I've seen you go on with a C rated tire, but that' just not for me.

Fair enough :), I can totally understand that trade-off/decision.

Nice job on the Tiara too - gotta love vlookup, especially now that it's faster.

It is a reg cab yeah, but does the extra 100 ish pounds of an xtra cab make that big of a difference? Legit question.
Also yeah it is a stick, but I'm still running the truck at about 3k on the tach at 75 down the highway. It has a transfer case and an aforementioned 6 banger too.
I figured speedo or odometer might be off but according to GPS on more than one 400+ mile trip they're both accurate.

    Uhh....... yeah I guess?
lol I'm not too sure what you want me to say man.

How do you know the difference if the OP hasn’t stated what MPG he gets? Are you comparing it to my truck? Do you know how heavy my truck is compared to yours? Keep in mind the double cab v6 4x4 is the heaviest stock 1st gen and we get the worst mileage. Yes, being manual also gets better gas mileage than auto.

Again, no two vehicles are a like and there are a lot of factors that play into what people can get in mileage.

I do find it strange that a truck could get better gas mileage than what the EPA states, when new, in your case a 20 year old truck now with bigger and heavier tires.

@chiefO Go with the 285. It’s a good balance for the street and trail. As for MPG, I wouldn’t worry about it too much unless you plan on using it for mainly street but I doubt it :) We do add ons to these truck that ultimately make them heavier and slower.

Which is what I do to calculate my MPG. And every time I fill up. I only go to the first click on the pump. However, in order to calculate your MPG like that correctly, your odometer must read correctly which is why I said what I did about matching the GPS speed to the scangauge MPH reading from the ECU. If the ECU is outputting the same MPH reading as GPS, then the ODO reading should be more better.

A few things I've learned and come to realize about the Speedo, Odometer & Fuel Efficiency

    1. If you're on a tire size other than what came stock on the truck (in my case 265/70/16), the speedometer will ALWAYS be 'off' - no exceptions
    2. GPS as a tool to measure MPH is always off, there is lag time so its not accurate
    3. I'm driving a 1st Gen Tacoma and my MPG/Fuel Efficiency is crap and always has been... always will be (especially with modding the hell out of it)

    Oh well. :notsure:

I'm not saying your not telling the truth here, just that... well, the likelihood of that being for real is pretty slim. The EPA estimates are tested under ideal circumstances, and 33 mud terrains are the exact opposite of that. Like your calcs are off or you're rounding up too much, or maybe you have some magic fuel.

You could also just pull the distance traveled from your GPS and compare that to your odo reading, then make a % correction based on that.

I did that many moons ago to see how much my 265/75r16s threw off my odo. It was maybe a couple %, if anything. Enough that I never bother making the correction when I calculate my mileage.

When I get 33's I'll repeat the process and see how far off it is and adjust accordingly. But honestly, I don't really care what the exact mileage is.

As long as I'm getting over 300 miles per tank then all is well. At 15 gallons it means I'm doing 20ish.

I don't think I've ever gotten 300 miles out of a tank unless I'm doing 100% highway, and unloaded. And even then, I'm on fumes when I coast into the gas station, lol. But I have a 4x4 v6 auto doublecab - the worst of the worst.

    My old 97 5 lug 4cyl I could pretty easily get 27-28mpg.

I pretty regularly get 330-350 miles (I'm sure 400 if I *really* tried) out of my 4Runner, but it's got a 20+ gallon tank.

fuuuuck I wish I could get 300 out of a tank. Best I ever got when I first had my truck (stock w/supercharger) was 315 miles all highway and I was running on fumes pulling into the gas station.

These days I'm happy if I manage to get 225 per tank lol

I have a 2wd automatic v6 and running 285's and I wanted to regear to 4.88. Its really hard for my truck to find gears right now when going up hills on 4.10 ratio. Im curious how much did it cost in labor to get it done?

I think usually $400-500 parts/labor or so depending on the shop, since you only have 1 diff...

4.88's are pretty typical of people with 35s. 4.56 might be a little better if you're looking for road handling. 4.88's are good if you want extra low gearing tho for rock crawling, etc... There are some gear ratio calculators online where you cn input your gears, rpm and speeds, and that helps determine the best ratio for a new set of gears.

gotta love these threads that keep popping up ;)

It's paid off so the only reason I check my mileage is to see if something is wrong! or how slow I must of been driving to attain 17-19mpg. Must of been 60 most of the time. lol
