doesn't 100% apply to all situations. if you live in a state that only makes you pay tax on the difference, then it makes more sense to trade it in.

example... if you trade in a $30k vehicle and buy another $30k vehicle, you will pay no additional sales tax. in my state, sales tax is roughly 10% depending on which county you are in, so you are saving $3k by not paying additional tax on the sale. sometimes you'll get more than that difference on a private sale. sometimes you won't.

another example... trade in a $30k vehicle and buy a $40k vehicle. you only pay the tax on the $10k difference, so $1k in tax. if you'd sold your vehicle for $32k or whatever private party and brought that money to the table to buy the $40k vehicle, you'd be paying $4k in tax instead of $1k. after the $2k difference on private party vs trade in, you'd spend $1k more by selling private party as opposed to trading in. ($4k tax minus $2k difference = $2k VS $1k tax)

I think it's a fine tranny, personally. If you've got a stable foot on the gas during acceleration it shifts nice and smooth.

My new Taco gets 2 mpg better fuel economy on the highway than my '05 and has 33 more horsepower. Hard to complain about that.

Man, I wish CA would get with that program. It would make all this vehicle swapping a little more tolerable.

I've had over a dozen new vehicles and none of them had any break-in to speak of as far as engine performance/fuel econ etc.

The biggest thing that helps is the transmission reprogramming. I got the TSB done on my 2017 a few months ago and it helped a lot. Drives way better.

I don't know what you mean by pay twice but CA surely does charge full sales tax on the entire price of the new vehicle with no regard for the value of what you traded-in. Thus, when you trade in a three month old vehicle, like I just did, the tax you paid on that new vehicle is a-goner.

Now, that actually does help you out if you are looking in CA for a used vehicle because owners are more likely to want to sell privately because the dealers gouge on trade-in values (like in every state) but the sellers get no tax break for trading in.

All new engines go trough a break-in phase. In some it is more noticeable than in others. With Tacoma after 5k miles and an oil change I get slightly better MPG, engine runs free-er and it doesn't sound like a diesel truck anymore. I am surprised that you've never felt any difference in any of your vehicles.

Yep. That is the case in several states. And it's great for enthusiasts who are in and out of vehicles frequently. But it's not the law in CA. I wish it were.

That sucks. I didn't know that about CA. I was complaining the other day, because we pay taxes on used cars, but some states, like OR, don't.

I drove a GTI for a couple of years - probably the best combo of fun/utility I've ever had in a vehicle so you are on the right track. Trouble with the GTI is it had all kinds of problems. I paid it off pretty quickly but was still basically paying a car payment because something needed fixed every other month. I am extremely handy and usually do most of my work but the way those things are built makes it very difficult to do so. I ended up selling it at around 75k miles because I had had enough. I moved to a 5 speed Subaru Forester and absolutely loved that thing... not quite as zippy as a GTI but might be a good compromise between truck utility and something that is more engaging to drive (the AWD system kills in those things too). I would deff consider owning another one - even more so if you have a cheap beater truck for the 5% of the time you actually need a bed.

You didn't scroll down on that page:

    States without Tax Benefit
The state of Oregon has no sales tax, so if you live in that state and buy a car, the tax calculation is easy -- zero. In seven other states, there is no credit or sales tax reduction when you trade in a car. Those states are California, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Montana and Virginia. If you live in one of these states you calculate sales tax by multiplying the full new car purchase price times the local sales tax rate.

Makes more sense. I paid about 10% TTL, which my understanding is the norm for a new car in CA.

Take if from someone with experience. Put your balls in the closet for 3 years and get a minivan. You won't regret it except for the few times that some hot lady looks your way and chuckles.

Lol , it says what I posted and what you posted which is the opposite . After I read all of it , it sounds like you do have to pay tax on the full amount along with those other 6 states . Wow that's a big cost to all who live in those 7 states .
