Knowing your average MPG and seeing it drop is a good indicator something is up. Ignore 1-3 +/- for fuel grade and summer/winter gas.

Even just your mood has a pretty large affect on your mileage, too. If you're all pissed off, or raging to some death metal, your MPG will drop. a lot.

Mythbusters even did an episode on it (confirmed).

If you have the right amount of self control, you wouldn't be in a bad mood.

I'm MPG conscious no matter what mood I'm in. That's a fact. For me anyways. If I had a gas sipper or sports car I'm sure it would fluctuate then.

I'm gas conscious too, but usually 30 seconds too late.

Like: "did I *really* need to go around that guy?" But by then I've already sucked down enough gas to make up for the light foot I had the last several miles, lol

Yeah but I have a 3RZ so I can't just mash the pedal to move around somebody.

That's what kept me from buying a Land Cruiser. No way I want hot rod mpgs in a big slow SUV.

I actually kinda wish I had my 4Runner's 4.0L in my Taco. That'd be pretty sweet. 4Runner is heavier, and I get 20-22 on the highway (12 towing my trailer), 17 in the city. The way I drive, that's pretty good, lol.

The problem with that method is you’re assuming I know how to get to the “distance traveled” on my GPS. Lolololol. I never use the thing and honestly wouldn’t have a GPS if it wasn’t integrated into my headunit. I’m the same way about the gas mileage... don’t care about it... but I’ll be damned to think my curiosity would let me get away with not knowing.

Ethanol-free gas should last longer right? I'm running 33's (285's) on my 3.4l 5spd 4x4 and i get about 16.5mpg with a 3" level up front. I'll be filling up with the ethanol-free to see the difference.

I am averaging 15-17 MPG and drive 90% freeway. I need to check some stuff though since it took a significant hit right around the end of last summer and hasn't gone back up. I was averaging 19 or so on the freeway before. Get a Scangauge to help monitor it all if you don't have one already.

When I adjusted my scangauge speedometer against my trucks speedometer I believe it was around the 3-5% mark off. Which if you adjust the mileage for my truck it is like 13000 miles extra added that are not on the odometer lol. So really I should be at 300k by now....

What you really want is a section of freeway that has mile markers. Then compare your odo to the signs and calculate from there. I'm 1/10th over so I just subtract 10% from total miles driven and divide by gallons used.

I have talked to a guy on this thread by the name of Ken who does regearing on here, and he said the 4.56 would be good if I had a manual but the 4.88 would most likely help the automatic pick the right gears to be in. Is this true?

This is absolutely true. I have 4.88’s with my 3.4 auto and sometimes I even wish I had 5.29’s. But I’m sure I’d be cruising in the 3k rpm range at 70mph if I went with 5.29’s.

To add to that, I feel like the the trans has smooth, consistent shifts with the 4.88’s and also downshift A LOT less often than it did with the 4.10’s
