All Things Bikes and Tacos! (...and every vehicle imaginable)

Since my bikes are only on there unattended for quick trips into the store or the parking lot at work, I use the 1up locks.

Convenient since the lock through the wheel and prevent the rack from opening, and since I ordered at the same time as the hitch lock, one key for everything.

 

Hmm that may work. My main use is Protection while camping while sleeping in the camper shell and quick trips like you mentioned

 

What are those covers on the rotors? Is that to prevent road grime from contaminating them?

 

Although 3C (triple compound) is considered an upgrade I don't feel they last as long....I just stick to 2C. If it was a road bike or you were racing enduro/xc I wouldn't bother with the multi compound.

 

I didn't get mine from REI but they're these. Yea, they're great for keeping dirt and grime from the roads out of your calipers if you're using a tailgate pad (they'd probably be good on a hitch rack too). They stay on tightly for a quick ride down to the trailhead, or a 1000 mile road trip.

 

Yeah, I've only hiked-a-bike to Oates Peak once... It wasn't amazing. I usually turn around before the crazy steep/loose shale section.

I enjoy the Hazzard - Manzanita - East Boundary Connector - Barranca loop too.

The new Canyon View trail that they just built is meh.

 

Do you happen to have the dimensions of the cross bars for the mobtown bed bars themselves? I know the KB Voodoos are 1.5 by 3 inches and don’t work with the frontloaders.

 

They're 1.5in x 1.5in for the crossbars.

 

i feel ya man. i just installed a high clearance tube bumper and it raised my rack almost 10". i have the Kuat NV, plus the +2 bike add on. i just picked up the Kuat swing arm yesterday. i will install this weekend. i also needed the swing out to fully pull out my bed drawers. ill post an up date once i put it to the test. i have full faith in Kuat, SOLID design. knock on wood...

 

^^^what he said. You can attach any standard 80/20 bars, but Mobtown ships them with the 1.5" x 1.5" version.

 

Im using the older ones, they are WAY cheaper. The new ones are made for attaching RTTs to your bed. I use a ground tent or a pop up camper so I have no need. Ordered from this guy on ebay. The new ones are stupid expensive.

Sure thing, I think you are thinking too much into it lol. What I did was put the cross bars on without tightening anything, put my bike up there and got it into a spot where the front tire didnt touch my rear glass, then measured it and made the other side that same distance, then I tightened it all down. The good thing about the bed rails and front loaders is you can move em around pretty easily. I got mine set up so the tire is like a half inch from the cab of my truck, but I haul a 29er and a 27.5+ bike. I can get out there and measure it for you though.

 

It's all good. I was planning to do just as you suggest once the gaskets arrive for my rack brackets, and I need to account for a RTT, as well. I was just trying to be more lazy than usual by asking you for a hint on the tire spacing.

I think I'll go for the Frontloader. Time to spend some more money...

 

Well, here we go!

Headed for an European bike and travel adventure. Bike was dropped off (definitely some anxiety when you trust your own bike to the baggage chuckers), and won’t see it till Austria.

Headed to Vienna, Budapest, then a couple small towns in Romania on the way to Bucharest.
Then some riding in the Carpathians, Slovenia, Croatia, and backtrack to Austria.
Plans are loose, going to play it by ear.
I have a month!

My wife did a road (pavement and gravel, on rented hybrid type bikes) in Romania last year with a friend. She loved it. Also inexpensive compared to Western Europe. And another friend shipped his Ibis over to Austria a few years ago and rode in the Tyrol, as well as doing some trail building. Europe on mountain bikes is on our list. Have fun!

 

I'd be interested in seeing how the Frontloader mounts up to the Mobtown bars and what clearances you get. I'm looking at possibly moving to the Frontloaders soon since my current one is not good with wider tires (my 2.2s are a squeeze).

Romania is one of the last unspoiled areas of Europe. Highly underrated for those who seek adventure.
It doesn’t hurt to have family there, and speak the language

It’s my first international trip with a bike. And riding anywhere outside of the US.
Not much info on the trails there, but they look fun from the little that I do find.

go get a length of chain at lowes and a decent lock. Then park next to another vehicle that has a flimsy cable.

Thieves are lazy.

 

A lot of the bike thefts around SLC have happened in the 2 minutes people go into 7-11 or whatever. go in with your guard down, come out missing a bike.
