Powertank Alternative

I'd love to own a powertank, but they are a pricey unit. As an alternative, would it be possible to run a keg style aluminum Co2 tank with a 150 psi regulator like this:

and achieve a similar result? Has anyone tried this with success? I think it would work for airing back up tires after a day of off-roading. I have spare tanks from brewing beer, so this would be super cheap to setup. Wasn't sure where to place this, please feel free to move it if necessary. Thanks!

Not sure how much psi one would hold. It doesn't take much to get the beer flowing.

Edit: for $50, You could probably just buy an air tank off cl or market place.

Wouldn't see why not. 1800psi? That will fill a few tires and maybe run some air tools.
I couldn't tell you about the fitting though. It would have to be rated for the test pressure which is 3000psi.

Buy the regulator from PowerTank then use your own bottles. Remember they expire every five years and it holds the air in liquid form not gas so count on very high pressure. I own a power tank and find it very convenient for airing up but it comes at a cost for the equipment and refills.

 

Even their regulator is $250! Ouch. I do like their filler attachment with the gauge though.

 

How much does a refill generally cost? AFAIK expiration means it needs to be pressure tested and re-certified correct?

 

$15-25 per refill on a 5lb tank from what I’ve seen.

Being able to refill all of your tires quickly = priceless

I still plan on having on board air for lockers and airbags. But the co2 tank will be nice to have. Trying to go cheaper since I won’t be using it all the time.

 

I've been using this regulator on a 20lb aluminum beverage tank. Just as nice as power tank at a fraction of the cost.
I mount the bottle on the rear fender well with 3 SCUBA bottle quick fist mounts. The trucks been airborn a few times and it hasn't gone anywhere.

 

Buy the 10lb aluminum co2 tank, and buy the 10lb fire extinguisher bracket and mount it to your bed rail like I did. You can find a 100psi fixed regulator with the quick disconnect attached. Or get the regulator solo and go to harbor freight for the fittings. Then go to Walmart and get their tire inflator for 18 bucks and a 200psi hose for 7 bucks. You want the 100psi to decrease the chances of a hose bursting as they are rated for 200psi at an ideal temperature but after filling four tires the hose and regulator get a nice frost to it

Correct. I pay $16 for my refills. Gonna buy a second bottle when mine expires so I wont be without one while I wait for it to be tested.

Just saw this; I second what @Bags4x4Taco said. If you can't afford the whole setup, just buy Powertank's regulator.

It's never frozen up on me during use and I've used my Powertank setup a lot.

 

If you buy a tank from the place you get it filled they will just exchange it every time with no wait and no worries about pressure testing ever. I had a real power tank when they 1st came out many years ago and now I have one that I put together completely from Amazon and the gas supplier. The only difference is the power tank is pretty and the tank you get from the supplier may or may not be every time you exchange it

 

Do you mind sharing what parts you used from Amazon to put it together?

 

I will have to go back and find them as it's been quite a while. But the regulator is a fixed pressure unit with no gauge. No need for one really. The hose it's a $15 cold tolerant hose, and the tank is a 5# tank that I swap every fill. Some people pay for the blingy power tank because looks. I'm a function guy. Carrying the tank anywhere other than the bed or behind the seat just to show it off is just silly.
