Thought I was crazy to go on a holiday weekend, but spent 5 days in Moab riding bikes and hiking and climbing and exploring... I try to go out there at least twice a year, been too busy with work. Camped way out on some BLM land and had nobody camping around me, some 4x4 traffic but not too bad at all. It keeps snowing where I live so I had to get out into the sun. Moab was much cooler than normal so that was nice, some rain and wind the first night and part of the next morning so the roads were a mess but they dry out so fast there. Bring on summer in Colorado please!

That's a shame. I honestly didn't think SLC was like that.

I'll consider myself lucky once again then that where I live, ride, and typically travel to the 1UP locks are more than sufficient. Many I see here just use a tailgate pad without locks anyway.

Weren't the Frontloaders re-called? I like the Thule Sidearms much better and feel that they are more secure.

I bought one of each (used) last year as I was not sure which would be better. But the Sidearm seems of much much better quality while the Frontloader seemed to be cheap plastic and not hold the bike as tight.

Just my opinion though. Unless the new Frontloaders fixed their old issue? Idk

Where I live it’s not unheard of to have unlocked bikes lifted from a pickup bed at a traffic light. Though I don’t always lock them when I’m driving in daylight. But I do check out the surroundings every time I stop. And I figure a tangle of bungee cords will slow a thief down, even if they never seem to keep the bikes upright (my Dakine pad has no top tube straps).

When I have bikes on the tailgate pad, I wrap a 15 foot version of this cable through the frames, rear wheels, and bed cleets:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072B9FPL3

I then add one of these locking cables to the loops at the end of the first cable:
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MG5WY3M

It's not terribly secure given the weakness of the cleet mounts in the rear of the bed, but it gives me a little peace of mind whenever I make a quick stop. They could snag my front wheels without much effort, but the cables may slow them down a little and prevent losing the whole bike(s).

Almost perfect... i just installed the Kuat Pivot swing arm on my new high clearance tube bumper. the plan was to swing the whole rack out of the way so i could access my bed drawers. it would have worked great if my bumpers clearance wasnt SO high. I now need to drop more $$ on a 2" hitch drop that will fix my issue but also reduce departure angle. Oh well, good thing i ride my bike more than i go offroading. i hope this helps someone in the future.

Nice casita. We bought an older one last year. I am curious about how you haul the bikes while towing the casita? Do you put them on the cross bars on your shell or did you get a hitch attached to the frame of your casita and use a hitch mounted rack?

Helped a friend with prepping for coat on his years ago.

Pretty much drop the swing arm and all the bearings, sandblasted the existing coating off etc. Also protected the pivot holes and BB threads plus headset internal surface with high temp tape to keep it from getting coated.

Since we did all the disassembly and prep it was pretty inexpensive, around $100. I believe he found a factory decal kit too. Its been years and the bike still looks great.

The guy I know that does powder gave me an off the cuff estimate of $125. I’d expect him to be more in the $200 area if I go through with it.

Good to hear he was in the right neighborhood with the quote.

The older frontloaders were recalled, and the front arm was redesigned. I dont believe you can purchase the old style ones anymore.

Would the heat from powder coating be detrimental to the aluminum frame? A flat black and gold bike would be sweet.....

    Digging the new fork

I’m no expert but I’d say doubtful. The oven gets hot, but not molten lava hot. I think in the 400 degree range.

Any bushing/seals/bearings would def need to be removed though.

Black is my jam, but too safe. Gold is too bling for me.

I was thinking possibly something close to quicksand (to match the truck), or military green (like the trek full Stache), or a brown of some shade. All being satin of course.
