Same here. Mine has acted like that two times in torrential downpours on the expressway. Other than that it's been issue free.

Yep, it’s a small angle change. Damn man I haven’t seen arctan in, say, a couple decades. You raise a valid point.

I believe MMW radar in autos has a relatively narrow beamwidth so it can distinguish between objects. Not sure if it’s narrow enough for a one degree change to matter. But I figure if the system has to be recalibrated every time any work is done anywhere near it it must be really sensitive. I read an article on TSS yesterday that talked about small changes in the sensor position having big effects on accuracy but I can’t find it now.

Yeah, Ive read multiple places that getting a tire alignment means you need to calibrate your sensor. Im betting that side to side angle changes matter a lot more than up and down. (So it can ignore other lanes of traffic).
That narrow beam has to distinguish between Semi trailers and Smart Cars and in both cases, if the vehicle gets a little closer the system will recognize it just fine, even if it is 2 inches too high.

....But changing your suspension or tires doesnt change the side to side sensor alignment which is why so many people arent having any problems with the system after getting such work.

YMMV, talk to your doctor, stay in drugs, dont do school, consult an attorney, call your mom.

I just took mine in today to get the master cylinder and the pcs recall done. They told me that my truck was modified and would do the pcs sealant and disable the sensor. I then called the Toyota dealer that I bought the truck from that seller lots of lifted trucks that are brand new. They said that for now they have to disable the sensor but Toyota is working on a fix because a lot of dealers sold brand new trucks with lifts on them. I decided to wait for a little while since I have not had any problems with mine. The dealer said they would let me know when it is resolved.

I have a pro grille and 265/70/17 k02 and they made me sign that stupid waiver and turned off my sensor with the button on the steering wheel and I turned it right back on and it work just like it did before the “recall”.

Do you have to turn it on every time you start the truck?

I’ve reached the far edge of my ability to understand the science, but the more I see the latest updates from dealership visits on this thread, the more ridiculous this all seems. The most interesting situation is a dealer that sells lifted Tacomas with TSS. Someone didn’t think this all the way through.

My truck was lifted by the dealer brand new, then sold to me. I just took it in for regular service and asked about the TSS recall/TSB. They wanted me to sign a waiver.
I read it over and refused. They said they can't do it per Toyota without a signed waiver. I said I don't want the TSS disabled and a sticker on my dash and reminded them of who sold me the lifted truck.
They said no problem and did the foam cover bullshit "fix" the recall requires, left the system on and no sticker. This is the ultimate shit show for dealers and Toyota.

Just my experience with this kinda stuff in ALL transportation vehicles.

First a TSB is NOT a recall it is an internal adaptation or repair done BEFORE a recall.

Full true recalls are ALWAYS on the FED level.
Air bags, gas pedal, Firestone tyres....

Manufacturers can issue internal recalls that comply with the FED but are considered “voluntary” which means you don’t get the “official” letter.

This TSB is set for stock vehicles per authorization codes and pay. If you rig is lifted then the warranty code no longer applies.

A good shop will still perform the TSB and calibrate the sensor. There is the ability to alter the numbers that the sensor sees manually, (same s**t on Nissan) it takes more time and IS not authorized under the TSB.

So, all you that are pissin a fit, Toyota can refuse to apply the software update on a lift, they must, however, disable the system ( permanently to avoid liability) and apply the weather seal.

Dealt with this same issue on Kia garbage and Nissan. Lifted trucks were manually set or disabled until Nissan made the necessary mod.
Nissan always paid up, but, it was a ton of pics and videos, notes and logs......it was easier for the customer to pay for the sensor “alignment”.

    Just to be clear
A TSB is NOT a recall unless specifically labeled as such. The dealer/manufacturer has A LOT of latitude on how, when, where, why.

Solution for y’all, disable the techno junk and pay attention to the idiots around you. Then bitch at the dealer or customer service about this and explain that you know it can be manually keyed. If you truly want this fixed, you need the information to fight with.

Y’all have some info now, search the issue, not the forums.

    Out

The aftermarket industry is pretty big, think people spend in the ballpark total of 40 to 50 billion a year modifying their vehicles.

So I guess I'll have to deal with this too, come my 5k and aftermarket grille. Personally I like it better if the TSS is off by default... but I'll tell them to keep that damn sticker off my dashboard!

You'd think Toyota woulda dropped the sensor in a bowl of water for a couple days and see if it leaks before going into production. I certainly would have.

The rubber poncho seems like a bandaid. I wonder if there will eventually be a recall. Seems to be a pretty critical component.

Has anyone had the recall performed and then installed a pro grille? I waited to install my grille until the recall was performed, which was performed today. It looks like the top screw to mount the sensor is covered by the "poncho". I haven't attempted install yet, but will tomorrow, but curious if anyone had just peeled back the rubber and then placed it back after the swap.. Am I over thinking things here?

I had mine done when it came out. Pretty much all they did was seal the sensor better and recalibrate. I actually had issues with it applying brakes. It’s not a big deal to me that I have a pro grill lift etc. find another dealer to go to.

It is challenging to keep condensation out of enclosed parts subjected to expansion and contraction and different barometric pressure and humidities. Although we think of them as sealed, all of our headlights, taillights, fog lights, and TSS sensors are vented to the atmosphere. If they were not, their seals would fail due to pressure differential. Also, you need to have a way for humidity and temperature. to stabilize between the inner space and outer space to prevent condensation.

I would agree with you, and argue that Toyota should have this completely figured out by now, but it seems they goofed on the placement or design of the vent. The “bandaid” TSB fix includes for continued venting, but with more splash-guarding over the vent openings.
