Has anybody had issues with their brake drums pitting and pieces of the casting breaking off? I had to have my truck towed today as the shoes seized to the drums after I parked it for a day and a half after driving in the rain. The dealer said they drums needed to be machined because of the pitting and they assume the pitting is what caused the shoes to stick to the drums. They also informed me a large piece of the drum casting had broken off at some time.

Had my backing plate bent on the inside on the passenger side, just bad parts quality. Good luck fighting this, those parts considered to be "wear items".

Dood, I'll tell ya what. I'm MT so I use e brake extensively (read always). Even on my AT vehicles, always. Never ever had the taco brake lock on me, it sits for 5 days every week between driving. My 99 4Runner has given 6 ft skid marks before breaking free, it sits 5 days tween driving Should not be a issue on your turd. Do you even e brake it for this?

Nope, you're seeing some of the structural loading issues. Starting to see in your head what happens in the field.

They use a real heavy duty specialized beam clamp, something like this lighter duty version... pinchg es on the inside of the frame so it does not get caught up on rocks.

Lol if the wife saw me run out with a measuring tape under my truck,
so I could then see if it would fit a standard C channel...
She'd be on the lookout for more truck parts arriving.... and I'll be sleeping in my truck, again.
figured the chances of the frame width fitting a catalog item were pretty slim anyways. LOL

At the front it completely boxes around the frame with 2 custom C channels also.

The gussets they have between the square tubing and the frame adapter plate look longer that what I see on some of the other versions out there. There are a lot on engineering nuances all over them.

I think Joe spent a lot of time jacking up the truck 1 point at a time measuring the plate to frame gap and beefing up different areas.
Then you get all these corn and Big Mac fed Americans stuffed in a 4runner on the trails to beat the crap out of em and see what flexes.

The hook is a bit too short to do much. But since you are bolting up from the bottom, you don't really need it anyway.

I use the e-brake all the time. All my vehicles have been manual. My old Honda Civic Si would occasionally have the pads stick to the rotors after sitting a few days in the rain, but would always break free without any problem and it has nearly 400k on it and doesn't see much use.

ooooooh okay, That's the missing link then. I was trying to imagine what sort of clamp would work as a semi-permanent solution but nothing came to mind.
(i'm still green behind the ears in regards of structural steel/ civil stuff so i don't know much, if at all, about different methods of connections. I got fucked over by the teacher strike that occurred a few years back, i was out of classes for 5 weeks. and being in the civil field now, I'm just a CAD monkey and i don't see structures as much as i was lead to believe :( )
    Now it all make sense.

Oh we were the ones that they kept away from the "rest of the herd" but always gave the toughest projects to.

Lol you should have seen the CEO's face at one company when I walked into the boardroom meeting,
and sat down, wearing an Ape costume then pulled out a Banana shaped pen to take notes.
Lol he then grinned and said "Glad you could make it" He stood up left the board room. ( I though of shit I've gone too far and he's gone to get HR or security to catapult my ass out the door)
I hear one of the ladies whisper "Who is that", VP of Eng says "It's XXXX who else whould it be"
CEO comes back in a cow costume with an udder that could squirt milk, sat down and said "Right not that we're all here lets get started"
lol the look on all the rest of the managers there was just priceless.

People are told to think outside the box... They ask me to please ge back in the box... LOL

Retired and became an Electrician, lol even in this career I'm outside the box, and Sparkies are a crazy bunch.
I'll bet you'll never find another Sparky that keeps a Rubber Chicken in his tool bag!
Lol when I graduated Trade School I got a selfie of me and the head of the electrical department with the same Rubber Chicken, known as "The Victory Chicken" lol the look on his face you can tell he is about to burst out laughing but still had a WTF look. Lol my poor instructors...

I'm sorry, I must have missed the part of this thread where this became an off-road brake locking up issue. Allow me to recuse myself from opinion.

I've heard of a few people mentioning rear brakes seizing on 2nd and 3rd gen Tacomas some "unstuck" them by putting them in 4Hi and "rocking" the truck a bit, others hit the drum with a hammer. While others had to have it towed.

After wading through the troll posts on those threads it was split between the parking brake cable and the shoes sticking to the drums.

    Forum users in the states have had their rear drums machined and replaced under warranty for surging brakes and shoes being stuck. So you may be covered for that... BUT if they give you a hard time about warranty. Ask them a question similar to;
"How would de laminating and structural failure of a cast metal component on the brake system be considered a normal wear? Are not material and manufacturing defects not covered under warranty? And isn't a material failure in a safety system for Automotive not supposed to be reported by Toyota? " If this material is breaking off will machining maintain or improve it's structural integrity? Would not new drums be safer and these one be sent to Toyota for analysis. "

If pieces are coming off, of it there is a metallurgical problem (chemistry, inclusions) or heat treating problem with those drums, machining is not going to fix that. From a liability standpoint Toyota should replace the drums, don't want pieces breaking off on the highway. .

Pad material sticking to steel is normal most of the time that is what people think is "warped rotors" on the front or warped drums on the back.

Happens when the pads are held against hot metal for a period of time and the pads cool down with the metal.
Much more area to "glue" on the rears to getting stuck pads is not that uncommon for drums.

60's cars taught me to first hammer on my emergency brake, and if that don't work get out and smack the drums with a hammer, lol

Civi and Mech are two totally diff disciplines, first year is the same then they go their different ways. Don't say "CAD Monkey" you may not realize yet, that you will be much better at than most Civies... Thinking 3 dimensionally and attention to details that didn't even cross their minds. 98% of people think two dimensional for structure/loading and design.
Besides, you just did FEA (Finite Element Analysis) in your head by just looking at things... I've me a lot of PHD engineers that can't do that. ;)

Well I figure overlanding is the major cause for early parts wear, so comparing hwy miles to it is not fair lol
