Somehow to my great surprise, it looks like James will be the new owner of the 5-Lug.

You can't swap engines where you live, you'll get greenpeace on your case. They might revoke your avocado toast license.

I think it depends on the situation. If I'm doing all the work and you're just sitting by watching I might want to be compensated a bit for my time. If we're working together and it's just fun with no expectation for me to do the whole job then I'm not charging.

My friend with the Civic offered to pay, and with the amount of work I'm doing I don't want to do it for free. I did the brakes on my buddy's Scion tC and didn't ask for anything since it's a simple job. He forced money into my hand as I was leaving his car the last time.

Again with my roommate's BRZ and his botched brake light wiring job, I fixed it for him quick in the parking lot. He offered to pay me but I couldn't bring myself to accept money for that, so I just asked him to buy me lunch and I was happy.

Really does depend on the amount of work that's being done.

I get that, I'm happy to help and small stuff I know I can do quickly is no problem at all. But my time is worth something too so if you want something of considerable size or difficulty done I'm not going to give my time away, there are other things I could be doing. But often times I'll take some food or exchange for parts. My buddy with the Z and I used to exchange work on each other's vehicles all the time.

Got the steering put back on the truck last night but that's about it. My neighbor who I don't know very well asked if he could help me so he lent a hand but we mostly just BSd. He was a helicopter mechanic in the army, pretty nice guy

Yeah, you can definitely weed out people by how they respect your time.
