The LED SAE J583 Fog Pod & Fog Light Review

I think I want to try and adapt the 2016-17 Accord fogs to my ARB bumper. They have a slight angle to them which seems to line up with the bottom of the bumper. Nice wide coverage too.

 

That would certainly be something unique! The fog hold won’t fit those obviously, you looking to use the corner light spot?

 

Thinking about making my own mount set back underneath the lower lip. Don't really want to cut out any metal and want all mods to be reversible.

 

Certainly no reason why you couldn't make it work. You'd want to make sure the fog pattern is level with your mounting. If the fogs lights sit level in the Accord and you follow the ARB bumper lines, you'll end up with a pattern tilted up to the sides blinding other drivers and defeating the fog purpose. It seems somewhat of a hazardous spot for trail use depending on the trails you run.

tl;dr I read all of the info on you testing the prototype before; what’s the testing on this? Confirmation of final product? I’ve been guilty of running Amber BD Sport’s with wide cornering for Fogs

The Accord fogs are at a slight angle and i'll have to make one side adjustable up and down to level out if it's off.

I'm also thinking of making them flip up inside the bumper and out of the way when wheeling. There is also actual mounts on the top of the bumper in the center section for lights but it seems a bit high for fogs. I'd like to find some square ones the size of the blinkers that are on the bumper. That would be ideal.

 

The prototypes I tested were an amber lens over their white SAE LED, which turns out fell outside the required SAE chromaticity window for selective yellow. Recall that their white lights are a bit blue, and blue light filtered through an amber lens has likely too much green to be in the SAE selective yellow requirements. They since changed the LEDs out with a 'warm white' version (4000k-4300k) which should produce a richer yellow, and since the LED color is closer to the filter color, you have a lower lumen loss rate through the filter resulting in brighter output, assuming the new LEDs are of equal intensity. While the prototype testing was fun and showed promise, I'd like to provide the data of the actual finished product for comparison.

Hopefully you have plans to change out the lights for street use, or at least recognize how unfriendly those BDs are for street use and modify lighting use habits accordingly.

Something to consider for a flip mount, is the ability to lock them in back at the right position so you don't have to reaim them every-time you flip up/down. If you went to a top mount, the KC G4s are available in a free standing universal mount. But I do agree that is a bit high of a position for fog lights.

Not going to be much of a comparison, these are massively brighter. But these are also selective yellow, vs KC being true amber. I pitched this product to Rigid over a year ago, I tested the prototypes back in October. All my testing is standardized, so you can compare the lux numbers in the prototype testing to the numbers of the KC Ambers below. The production version of these Rigids use a warm white LED vs the prototype using cool white. Warm white will have less filtration losses, meaning they should be higher in output over the prototypes. I'll test them soon.

I’m a bit confused. Rigid said they swapped the LEDs to warm white to meet selective yellow vs the prototypes using cool white.

However, based on my data:

The light output is nearly identical. I’ll have to compare side-by-side to the prototypes and possibly ping Rigid because it doesn’t appear these are actually any different.

I do wish I sprung for the extra $500 option on my light meter when I purchased it to give me color chromaticity so that I would have a better tool for the color definition, but based on what I’m seeing it looks the same.

Yes, it certainly appears that way.

 

That's good for me. Won't have to replace the pre production models I am running. Just reinstall them
