    Hopefully it helps.
I'm curious about the fragments coming off, if it was the thin material "flash" around the inside edge from where the tooling parting line is, it's nothing to worry about,
but if it's couple mm deep or more around the outside edge (on the thick material) on the open side it can be from too fast of a quench during the heat treating process.
Causes stress cracks, and the edges cool faster so it happens more frequently there. And commonly looks like someone took a little bite out of the edge.
Rockwell Hardness tester can check that real quickly but they won't have one of those at the dealer.
. Light corrosion normal on any machined steel surface, but heavy pitting is not, chromium and nickle is added to iron for corrosion resistance and strength, too low an amount and steel can rust and pit quickly, if that pitting is black it's from inclusions / voids in the metal.

    Oh that's easy to answer...

All depends who you talk to,

Ask a P. Eng and they will say "The center of the universe. The world could not be built without them"

Ask his wife and she will say "The center of his ass, he couldn't even build a shed in the backyard"

Ask a Tradesman and He will say "They sit on the left hand of Satan sniffing glue for designing it this way, how the f$ck am I supposed to get in there to fix that"

    Lol when people say Hierarchy this immediately comes to mind ;

Mine look much similar, but not quite that size yet. I've transitioned to 2 gallon pots first, then will transplant to 5 gallon.
Back yard is under construction, so I need them to be portable.

That area is non-structural, since the brake shoes squeeze against the inner wall. However, it's out of balance and will vibrate badly. Get Wagner drums with E-coat if you're out of warranty already.

Whoa. yup those drums are "fucked" do NOT let them machine them and put them back on your truck.

Tell the dealer you want those replaced under warranty and do not accept anything less.
Both drums because they could be from the same heat treating batch.

See the cracking around the stud holes! Not safe at all.

The part that broke off is in an area that would not have been touched if you would have run something over.
They didn't break that off when removing the drum because it's oxidized, so it happened a while ago. Wasn't rubbing.

It's caused by the heat treating in the manufacturing process. Might have been a Monday morning batch. Or really off chemistry of the steel.

That should be flagged when it goes back for Toyota for analysis because that kind of failure on a safety system may be a reportable item.
If Toyota starts seeing more of those they will have to do a recall.
Fortunately it would only be a few hundred trucks based on the lot size of those drums, that's all traced during manufacturing and correlated to vin numbers and assembly dates and time.

Lol described it before I saw it, but that is a real bad one.

I am, but I still got a month to survive this neck of woods! Sales tax here cheaper, made it easier to purchase. It was in the plans anyways after my last cover flew away in Montana

I am right across YEG, fires don’t affect this area much, except for smog coming down and apocalypse like clouds in the daytime.
