Keep the Shell or Remove the Shell?

Hi All,

should i keep or remove my shell what do you guys think?

Also for those who own a shell, did you obtain increase or decrease in mpg?

 

Do you use it ? Like for work or camping ?

 

Mine is off and on several times a year. I think it looks better without it (on mine) but I need it on for alot of stuff. Can't attest to the change in mileage, don't really pay attention to that.

The best part about a topper is that everytime you put it on or take it off it feels like you have a new truck; dramatically change the look of your truck in about 5min.

Yours looks pretty slick on, but I always prefer the look of a truck topless.

Your question completely depends on what you use your truck for and what type of lifestyle you have.

I myself want to get a Leer XR sheel for the 6ft bed in my access cab taco so that I can put a surf rack on it to haul long boards and hybrid boards around, and also so I can keep my shortboard in the back of my truck 24/7, or lock my mountain bike in the back so I can have lunch after I ride without worrying about my bike.

I also plan on getting a dog or two in the future, so a camper would be perfect for driving with dogs in the back.

Honestly your truck looks pretty good right now with the shell. Why are you thinking about getting rid of it? Maybe take it off for a few months and if you find you don't have a need for it, then sell it. I wouldn't sell it before I tried that though.

 

Yeah i use it when i go camping and take my dogs around. I just put it back on last week. I was thinking of selling it but im kinda liking the look of it..and yes it feels like i have a new truck lol

 

Camping and dogs? That's a pretty easy call: keep it man.

 

keep it!!!! i love mine. i use it for camping, hunting, my dog stays back there, and to put my rock climbing gear, etc etc in

 

I think it looks great and is really functionable

 

Totally a personal choice, me I love mine and would not be without it.

Looks great! Some shells just don't look right on these trucks but this does. What does something like this cost?

 

Keep it, I wish I had one for my Access Cab.

 

Shells are typically around $1100-$1200, but can really range from about $1000 to $2000 or so depending on options.

Keep the shell. You own it and lose too much money selling it.

I will always get a shell for all my trucks from now on. I can take it on and off as I need it. It takes about 15 minutes to take it off or put it back. I can do it by myself because I have built a table out of 2x4s and I can slide the shell off the bed on to the table and vice versa.

The truck feels lighter and more nimble without the shell. The mileage never seems to change with or without it. But it is nice to secure stuff and keep stuff out of the weather.

 

I vote keep it. I think it balances out the DC shortbeds pretty well:

 

keep it! using mine tonight..headed out for backpacking/deer hunting. i have lots of gear, nice to know it is locked up, somewhat securely.

driving home with the deer is nice too. treehuggers in RV's wont be gasping in horror at the bloody bag in back. ahhaha. i use a light blue pillow case to bring out the steaks.

 

I've been trying to come up with a method for an "easy" oneman removal/re-install for my Leer canopy. I have fore and aft Yakima roof racks on mine, so have been toying with the idea of four chains, with rings on the ends, hanging from my carport ceiling which could be hooked over the ends of each rack. The truck could then be driven out from beneath the shell. Suggestions anyone?

 

Personally, I think it looks great. But you gotta do what makes you happy.
