It would be a horrible mistake to buy either a Mini (routinely makes the lists of most unreliable cars) or BMW (expensive and unreliable, and has turned into a car for punks and chicks).

Great post man. I have been trying to tell people this for years but... I am an engineer not a lawyer. I think you might make people think twice lol.
I have been an expert witness in countless cases and I see what happens. Best thing people can do? Buy exactly what you want and don't mod it. Buy a beater and mod ot if you must.

My brother drove a very recent 425i when he was in his "buy a more expensive car to attract women" phase. Of all the German cars out there, the BMW had the lowest quality interior by far, something that other people also say, but I hadn't personally verified as I was never interested in bimmers. He ended up with a GTI that was 4k off due to the dieselgate nonsense, and is quite happy with it.

4Runner Trail wheels and Toyo Open Country ATII tires 265-70-17. Cosmetic stuff like Pro grille and OffRoad black bumper trim, vinyl delete on side, added hood graphic, OEM tube steps.
Truth be told, there are consumers all over the country who are prevailing every day in MMWA cases and having their attorney fees paid by the losing manufacturer.

I ran into that with my 2G. I was having the rear suspension TSB done because I had the shimmy and I was hoping to get the TSB leafs out of the deal. They had done the part prior to the leafs and the dealer told me they'd set me up with a rental car but the rep needed to approve it. She came in, saw my ARB bumper and denied me anything further.

Went to a different dealer after I threw the lift on because my transmission was shifting wonky (the TC clunk) and the dealer replaced it under warranty without issue. While this isn't relevant to the M-M act, it's just an anecdote to corroborate your comment.

First, OP is your dog a Staffy?

Second, wrong place wrong time! Shitty situation, sorry.

Third, always own two suits! Funerals and interviews.

Finally, Ive found that dealerships want to do warranty work, modified or otherwise, as it is paid for by the manufacturer not the dealership.

People need to learn to make relationships which in turn creates trust vs. threatening with lawsuits, trying to reference Acts, etc.

Friends like to do good things for each other, not the other way around.

Great post and thanks for sharing.

We had a staffy bull, brindle and white, who lived to the ripe old age of 16....the dog in my profile pic is our current patterdale terrier....14 lbs of pure terror.

I can’t even tie a tie. I actually had a salesman tie one for me 25 years ago and and I’ve been loosening and tightening it as needed since then.

Ha! Thank GOD the Marine Corps taught me a few useful skills for life to include how to tie a tie. Beautiful dog. I have had two Staffy's (currently on my second).

First, I know this thread is old.. however it is pinned and I am answering a direct question that I did not see anyone else answer AND I have a question that relates to this topic...

I *believe* it would cover any modification the selling dealer performed.. I am no expert and not trying to give advice just the extended warranty contract for Toyota specifically states:

"All manufacturer-original equipment parts installed by the manufacturer or your selling dealer are are cover under this agreement for the mechanical failure. Unless otherwise excluded..." And it lists all the normal wear and tear stuff after that
Now I did specifically ask my selling dealer if I opted for them to put a lift kit on my Tacoma if it would be covered and they stated it would be IF I did the Toyota OEM lift kit which consists of Bilstein shocks front and back and I think he said add-a-spring to the rear.

My question, does this sound correct? I do not want to do something that might come to bite me down the road. I want to do light off-road and weekendlander'ing

When I worked at a dealership the guys used to laugh when people brought in a modified vehicle and claimed it had to be Warranty because of the Magnusson Act. People would threaten Lawsuits until they realized how expendive Lawyers are. The Warranty covers the vehicle they sold, not the one you built. Yes, a 4 inch lift and 50% bigger tires wear things out faster. Have fun battling a Dealership, they’re more experienced than you and probably have a better lawyer. To be fair they didn’t care if you got different wheels etc. as long as they were close to stock.

It is good to dream. However the internet would be a lonely place if people knew what they were talking about. Myself included.
