i would like to buy a Taco
I am also new to the forum. A good friend of mine has 2 and loves them. He’s very particular so I know Tacos are a good buy.
On a high level. Is there anything I should know ? Model Years to avoid ? Things to watch out for? Best to go new or used? Really need a 4 door model for the kids. Other than that not picky. I’m not opposed to a used one. Thoughts ?

I'd go new. Resale value is super high. If you dont plan on off-roading a ton, the trd sport is a good middle-ground model. You can get one new for $32-35K depending on options. I'd go that route. Also check out the manual transmission if you're into that

You might not have very good luck buying used. Someone may have already started eating it.

Apparently I shouldn’t call it a taco. Is that offensive in Tacoma world ?

I'm 66, retired. Owned many cars. I decided I wanted something fun for my next vehicle. I researched all mid-sized trucks for a couple of years and decided on the Tacoma...2019 TRD Sport. Not disappointed. Love the tech stuff...it's loaded. Best vehicle I've ever owned. Most importantly, it's just plain fun to drive.

Start by figuring out your budget. These tacos tend to hold their value, it’s one of the few vehicles that I feel is a safe buy when new.

These trucks like to drink the fuel, so if your driving/commuting a bunch, consider this.

Oh there will be some mods all right
You're good, it's like initiation, people give you a hard time then help. All three gens are great. Test drive to see your favorite. Some people aren't too fond of the third gen engine and transmissions so make sure you go for a long test drive to see if it bothers you or not. Personally, I felt the second gen drove better. As far as years to avoid, 05 and I believe 06 had head gasket issues and body mount issues. Someone correct me if I misremembered. Also 2012 have smog pump issues.

You said your buddy has 2 tacos? Which years does he have? As him which one he likes better lol I'm sure he knows more than most guys on here if he has 2 of them. I'll give you my opinion though, 2nd gen all the way. Just have to decide what you need, long bed, short bed, cab size, I'd buy 4x4 no matter what because if you take even one trip to the snow, it'll be worth it.

Edit: just saw you have kids so definitely gonna need the DC. I like the Long bed as well, not the best for offroading, but I offroad the shit out of my truck even with a DCLB. Only scrape the rear sometimes lol.

    Like, so many.
I’ve got a 2017. Zero complaints. It’s awesome. It’s very capable off road and I’ve really enjoyed modding it to make it my own.
