But that is nothing at all new, nor is it specific to Toyota.

Uhhh, no. A sequential transmission can only select gears in a linear sequencethe Tacoma auto is just a simple automatic transmission, S mode is simply a way to lock out the overdrive gears (5 & 6) You can use S mode to down shift by pulling back to select the top gear allowed, but it will not upshift on command, it will still operate as an automatic up to the top gear you have selected. it is in no way a paddle shift auto. Period. I really don't know why this so complicated to so many people.

And certainly, most folks, don’t need to watch a YouTube vid to understand what’s going on. That’s what surprises me. I thought it was just obvious, but maybe no.

Paddle shifting, funny how you can now be a world class race car driver while playing a video game. Literally.

Yes you can go up and down thru the gears using the shifter in S mode and yes you can wind out the gears that you're in. If you're stopped at a light and it is on 3, it will shift from 1st to 2nd then to 3rd and wind out fully in 3rd until you shift it to 4th. As you come to the next stoplight it will automatically down shift to 1st thru the gears while the shifter is still where it was, whether it be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6th gear (as shown on the dash). Don't know if there is a safety feature that will upshift it to the next higher gear if it's taken to too high of an rpm, not brave enough to try that and no desire to find out.

As far as locking our gears while in S mode, whatever gear you've selected, all gears above that are locked out. If you shift it from D to S it's now in 4th, as shown on the dash. Starting from a stop every gear above 4th is locked out. Stop again and shift it up to 5th, it will shift thru 5th but 6th is now locked out. Stop again and shift it to 2nd, as shown on the dash and it will shift from 1st to 2nd but not above, 3rd thru 6th are.locked out. At least that's how I understand it... Gonna' have to try it tomorrow.

Yes, manual shifting with acceleration from a stop, but also manual down shifting with deceleration at higher speeds.
You can also make it shift up or down before the transmission would do so automatically.

Forgive me. I’ve made many mistakes in my life.

I think a lot of people can learn from a Toyota USA video as there constantly seems to be people asking about S-mode on TW. That’s why I looked it up on YT amongst other sources in the first place.

Some say “sport mode”, others say “sequential mode”. Some just say S-mode.

All this confusion and this entire thread wouldn’t be necessary if the “auto” mode on these transmissions actually worked.

Just drive the truck, if you are going too slow stomp the gas, the truck will pay attention then.

I started driving mine in Sport only. Treat it like a clutchless manual. It gives me the power that’s missing from Drive mode and + 3 mpg in the city. Much more connected driving experience too.

Is there anyway to get my 21 AT OR to shift from Drive to 5th gear instead of 4th in the sport mode?
