I bought my Taco used with 34k miles. Definitely didn’t want to pay the used dealer for their crack pot warranty. But - should I buy one from Toyota?

And - what’s a reasonable price to pay for a ext warranty? I’ve called a few dealers to learn more and they all quote different prices (in DFW area).

    Any feedback is helpful. Thanks

I just bought a 2016 OR with about 66k on it. I bought Toyota’s extended bumper to bumper warranty 5 years or 60 thousand miles I paid $1650, I am up in NY. I passed on the tire and wheel insurance and gap insurance.

No. They'll fight you hard on on what is covered when you try to collect. Put the money away and hold it for repairs down the road. Stay up on preventive maintenance and the probably won’t have serious repairs anyway. Chances are you’ll come out ahead. EWs are scams to line the sellers pockets.

No, I wouldn’t waste the money. Both Toyota and the dealer will promise everything is covered when it’s time to get you to buy the warranty, and will deny coverage whenever you need anything repaired.

An extended warranty is a type of insurance, and they actually make money by denying coverage. Even when something is rightfully covered, you are likely to have to fight tooth and nail to have them honor it. That’s how these things work, unfortunately.

On a 18 I would be on the fence. If your truck has Blind Spot assist I would buy it. Mine failed & thank goodness I did buy the Toyota extended warranty or else it would have been $2600 out of pocket. So far with that repair & the timing chain cover oil leak repair the warranty has paid for over $5K in repairs. Your foolish in thinking these trucks dont have expensive repairs out of the warranty period. I highly recommend the Toyota extended warranty but only that one & you can negotiate the price!

This is a 50/50 shot here. I got the EW on our Rav4 but did not on the Taco.
I will let you know how it goes on the Rav4 because I am about to use it. The Radio touch screen is sparatic and will sometimes work fine, other times will not respond to touches.
I did not get any extended plans on the Tacoma because I know I will be doing things to it that would void it or give them reason to say I may have voided it.
I guess it depends on what your plans are with the truck. The biggest thing the EW would be good for will be the electronics.
If your radio goes nuts, would you want a factory replacement or would you upgrade to something better? If you have the 2018 plus, if one of the sensors goes out, would you want it fixed, or just disable the safety stuff? Also, if you change out the grille and that sensor goes bad, good luck getting that covered.
In short, it's situational. Do you want to mod or keep it stock? Do you want factory replacement should something go bad? Are you O.k with paying out of pocket and taking that chance?

Get the warranty but negotiate the length and price.

I bought it for my brand new 18 Taco. $1,750 for 10 years or 125k whichever comes first.

Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of shit. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.

I think the warranty is only as good as your dealer-
If your dealer wants to help, they can; if they don't, it's very very hard to make them.
Yes, you can take your truck to another dealer, but they will see the denied claim, before anyone even pops the hood. Some dealers see this as an opportunity to gain a new customer, and some flag you as the town crier. So, back to the warranty only being as good as the dealer.
Also understand, while not necessarily above board, many dealers consider the customer's purchase history, when figuring out who they are going to stick their necks out to help. Repeat customers get preferential treatment, like nearly any other business.

Funny yes but with the Toyota extended warranty not true. I have had no issues getting repairs covered.

Like everything else, extended warranty’s are designed for 1 thing: to make the dealer more money. The smart thing to do is take however much money you would be spending each month on that warranty and just put in savings. If the off-chance that something does break down on your truck, you’ll probably have enough $ to cover it. If nothing does happen (the most likely scenario) you’ll have more money for important things like donuts

Generally speaking, extended warranties are a waste of money AND troublesome to get repairs fixed. It's like asking "Can I win money at the casino?" Sure, for some folks it works out, but for the majority, no.

Just traded my 2016 for a 2019. Due to all the new tech on the 2019 I will keep it only as long as it remains trouble free. If it breaks out of warranty I will get rid of it. I generally don’t keep my vehicle more than three years.

I only used extended warranties twice on 2 different vehicles on minor stuff. One was for the roof molding and once on my GTI for a broken AC vent. No issues either time but it was both small potato stuff.

I haven't know anyone to have warranty issues as far as getting denied for something legitimate in my area but that's very YMMV.

Its just a bet really. I'd say most wont have any issues and if they do it will be mainly early on and within the factory warranty. I did get the warranty because it cost very little from the cost recovery of my last warranty to get the one on my new truck.

If you do get it make sure its from toyota and not some 3rd party and make sure you run the numbers on miles vs years. If you drive a ton you want more miles then years on the warranty vs if you dont drive much get years vs miles. All of that comes into factor with the price.

Also, it doesn't hurt to shop the warranty at other dealers. You can play the price off one another to a certain degree. You should have XX number of days to apply the warranty after the purchase so just be sure to ask how long you have.
