I might be interested in the 3rd and ECU, but not sure i want to undertake the process of installing all of it.

Edit: also that sucks man, sorry to hear that.

Thanks man. In theory everything should get put back to the condition it was before the accident and I'll just be out the insurance deductible and a lot of wasted time. I have a trip planned to central Oregon with some other FJ guys next week, so I'm just hoping it will be driveable again by then!

Because thats the smarter option. Actually, if I got a 2010+ FJ rear axle, I would upgrade to a stronger rear axle with the built in locker and a lot of the time I could get it for around $600 if I looked hard enough.

Its a 8.2" vs the 8" that came with it. Also theres a good amount of evidence that the 8" gets sloppy near 200k and can grenade which is why it got changed in the 4runner and FJ in 2009

8.2? Or like the 8.4 in the non off-road Tacomas? It's really still an 8" ring gear but 12 bolts holding the ring gear to the carrier instead of 10 on the elocker. bearings are slightly different too.

Edit - I wonder if just the 3rd could be swapped or if it would have to be the whole axle

More than likely the casting is different, but they may share the same shafts if the wms is the same. Or they could have beefed the spline count up.

When i shredded my diff the guys at nitrogear said it was a common issue in 8” rear ends.

The TRDsports now have an open 8” and the TRDOR have a locking 8.4”

I've heard quite a few horror stories of arb's failing. Most common I seem to hear or read about is air leaks inside the diff and blowing diff oil out. Along with ripped or pinched airlines can be more of a hassle than a convenience compared to the elocker IMO. The elocker at least can be operated manually if needed during a failure with actuators or solenoids. Also the ease of finding a replacement locally vs having to send it out to a shop avoiding extended downtime. Most wrecking yards have an elocker on their lot somewhere and you can have it fixed or replaced same day.

New TRD sports have an open rear diff and not an LSD now?

Up till 08 or 09 it was a true LS I think? After that it's abs/electronic simulated LSD afaik.
