Just enough protection to insert and get by a rough edge - doubled or tripled - cheap.

    Mods? Yes, oh yes..
haha, I remember in the BSA handbook you could make a backpack, life vest, pontoon boat, float plane... ok ok maybe not a boat or plane but it seemed like there were a zillion things to use pants/jeans for. (I'm sure I'm mixing in other books. there was one similar to the BSA field guide and handbook... maybe also by a scouter that had tons of survival/camping skills and instructions)

edit/found it: The American Boy's Handy Book By Daniel Beard (one of the founders of scouting in America)

 We have some other legs used in the camping gear - my Mrs sewed one end closed and then rigged the other with a drawstrings. There's one with re-bar pegs and so-on - whatever is long and skinny and known to scatter. I know one of my field service outfits had the arms and legs of a jacked set of Carhart arctic coveralls, rolled up and stashed in the toolbox. Whatever works.......

Armrest cushion. Picked up from Amazon few months ago . Forgot what brand but they got several similar looking ones . Cut off straps and glued anti slip shelf linner on so when need to access console comes off easily .

Sometimes the simplest mods are the most useful. Like all of us, I occasionally use my tailgate as a workbench. But that corrugated plastic cover on the inside makes for a terrible work surface. I want to eventually get a steel replacement but that's not as priority right now what with the limited funds I currently have in the Truck Fund.

So for less that $25 and a trip to Home Depot I came up with an adequate improvisation that will do for the time being.

Here is a simple 48" x 12" MDF shelf board from Home Depot for about $11 and change, held down by some countersunk drywall screws I already had. On the edge is a 48" piece of aluminum U channel to keep things like nuts, bolts, small parts, etc. from rolling off. The aluminum is also about $11.

Quick and easy, cheap, and installs in <10 minutes.

Aren't you concerned that it will come apart in the weather? Just wondering. Looks like a good mod for me other than that.

Well, it's cheap to replace if necessary and it is just temporary until I can get something metal.
