Access Cab Sub-Woofer box build

Hi Everybody, I figured I would document my first project on here. I'm building a box for a Sundown Audio X8 Subwoofer, my requirements for the box was that it had to fit in between the rear two seats of my access cab so I didn't lose any seats and that it had to be at least 1 Cubic foot(the box is sealed).

Anyways, this is the progress I have made so far (pictures):










And yes, I went really over kill on wood-glue because I didn't want any room for error. All the excess will be scraped off, don't worry.

"These woofers are optimized for small PORTED enclosures of 0.25-0.33 ft^3 volume (6.5"). They are not suggested for sealed enclosures or large enclosures of any kind. Please keep this in mind."

Secondly, that thing looks like WAAAAY more than around 1 cubic foot, and even that would be three times too big for an X8 subwoofer. I even went to the REV1 subs to see if I'm missing something and they don't even have a 8" Rev. 1 listed.

Correction, 0.25-0.33 ft^3 is for the 6.5" driver. The 8" requires 0.75-1.00 ft^3

 

I’m just gonna try it and see what it does. When I have the money I think I will go to two of em. They should be fine in that box.

 

Don't do it, you'll pop them both. That box is WAY too big and needs to be ported. Listen to the people that manufacture the driver and build the right box:

• * Note on Power Handling: This woofer is mechanically limited. It requires a SMALL ported enclosure. Placing it in a large enclosure will reduce mechanical power handling substantially.

That box might work out to be around what's needed for a ported enclosure once a port is accounted for. You can always stuff it to make it smaller if needed. Or use a different driver. Maybe make up a double baffle to eat up some space and help with reinforcement. This is gonna be a tricky sub though as the suspension is set up for SPL - better suited to burps tuned to a peak frequency than music. Maybe that's what you're going for, but it may not be a better choice for every day use. Maybe model everything as it stands & see what you can do with a port? If you do decide to rebuild, perhaps consider a different building material such as MDF or plywood (baltic birch if possible).

 

Alright guys, so I did end up listening to you guys and I went with two Kicker 8' Type R subwoofers. the specs lined up for the sealed box unlike the sundown audio X8.

Good stuff & good onya for DIY! Gonna build a grille for it? A wood frame & a little grille cloth & that thing would disappear from the outside.

 

Yeah, a cloth grill would look great.

 

FWIW the rough side of Velcro grabs that carpet pretty well should you decide to go the grille route. I'm using it to secure a vertical grille in an old truck on bumpy roads - works great.

 

Wow, I really like the look of that grill clothe, definitely gonna have to invest in one soon.

 

It isn't actually 'grille cloth' but best I can tell it's acoustically transparent and feels like grille cloth. I found it at JoAnn locally...this stuff here. Maybe they have it in your color? Under 3 bucks got me enough for 2 grilles.
