Its bad if it makes clicking noises, if no noise, most likely you can clean it, reboot and repack with grease and it will be good to go. Look for people parting out first gens, and pick up some old ones as spares, then just reboot the old ones. New oem is 500 a piece, you can pick up two used ones for $100

My drivers side CV has been clicking for awhile, probably the better part of 6 months and several trails. Pretty sure it's a time bomb lol.

I have one good experience changing a CV and one bad experience....50/50 chance I'll do it right next time lol

side note - don't mess up the threads on the new CV axle you install and if you do, don't force the axle nut on and cross thread it and assume it's seated all the way in place. And if you do, don't take the truck on a 300 mile road trip the next day. Because it will kill your wheel bearing :bananadead:

yeah it was an expensive lesson, the axle nut wasn't seated all the way which left some play in the wheel. And I was on a 300 mile trip up to Santa Cruz for my wedding that very weekend lol. Luckily for me, the wheel bearing started to give out right when I got to Santa Cruz (not somewhere remote on the 5 freeway thankfully).

Pulled into the closest shop and was at their mercy. $950 dollars later I had a new wheel bearing, axle and brake rotor installed the next day.

The "like" button turns into a "unlike" button if you like it first haha.

Yeah I would much have preferred to fix the problem myself on my own time and dime but needed my truck that weekend, so I didn't have much say in negotiating the work.

I was just relieved and thrilled to get my truck back the next day TBH. The wallet dent hurt though.

That particular axle I fucked up just wouldn't slide into the diff, even with the C-clip lined up. I had heard this was somewhat common and that you sometimes have to tap it in there, but my mistake was that in my frustration and haste I used a hammer on the end of the axle without realizing that was going to mess up the threads. Should have wrapped a towel around it first.

For future notation, put the axle nut on the shaft almost all of the way and hit the nut with the hammer, not the shaft. Then you can remove the nut and you’re threads are safe.

Yeah it sort of made me a little more 'financially conscious' when we did our honeymoon in Big Sur afterward that's for sure

I’ve heard of this method, but that’s assuming you have the set up/tools. I’ve never done it this way myself.
