Incredibly stupid question incoming: How can I tell the difference between a front and rear disc brake? I was given a brake that is supposed to be for the rear, but the mounts are completely different, and it also doesn't fit on the front wheel.

Not a stupid question. Unfortunately there are a couple of standards for brake mounts; post, IS and flat mounts. Post and IS are the most common that I'm aware of these days. What brake were you given? (Shimano, SRAM, Hayes, etc) Is there a model number on it? Depending on what you have (brake versus frame) you might be able to find an adapter to make it work.

It's a Shimano XT M785. It looks more like and IS mount, and gets closer to fitting the front, but completely different from the rear.

That's what I was thinking. it is going on an older, 2001 I believe, Cannondale Super V. brake is from 2014.

Edit: That looks exactly like what I need.

    Sweeet! Get a oneup.

    Or get a new oneup.

    Deal! Get the oneup.

I have two. Flawless. Get the oneup.

Meh, oneup is cheaper and shorter stack length meaning more travel.

    Like I said... oneup.

Oneup also makes a killer remote.

Not sure, but cables are like $5. Don’t forget to squirt a little triflow in the housing.

By brake do you mean caliper? The only difference between front and rear is the length of hose, and which side the lever and mc mount on.

That's actually not nearly as bad as I envisioned it would be.

About to drop into my favorite single track during the shake down run on the Trail Pistol. Plus a friend I made along the way.

I have had a Deer and a Dog run out in front of me on the bike path but thankfully never one of those!

Rattlesnakes and mountain lions are what I lose sleep over. We have both around here.

I've only ran into two rattlesnakes, but no mountain lions. Their prints and scat are all over. I'm sure I've ridden right by a few.

Yep. You can get a separate mount collar, or go with a brake mount. You pick the type of brake mounts you use, and the remote will be one with the mount. Makes for a cleaner tighter cockpit.
If you’re not sure the type you need, just post which brakes you’re using, and I can help you out.

God yes. Two years ago I was riding behind a buddy when I saw a rattlesnake pop out and strike at him. It hit his wheel, got thrown and landed under my front tire. All in under a half second. I yelped like a girl when it was hurled at me.
And lions are scary as hell. You have no idea where they are, but you know they’re there. And a solo rider at dawn/dusk huffing and puffing along the trail, I’m sure will trigger their hunting instinct. I just hope there’s easier prey around and they’re not hungry.

I'm seeing snakes about half the time I go right now. Just the season I guess. I try not to think about it, but with all the overgrowth on the trails down here right now, it does kind of give me the heebie geebies. One that I saw a couple weeks ago slithered into a bush beside the trail. I mean, right beside the trail, and that was as far as he felt like he needed to go. Couldn't see him for shit once he was in there. Makes me wonder how many I ride right by and never know are there.

This bush is right on the side of a single track, and there's a 3 ft rattler at the base of it. Where's Waldo.

Rode most of the pennisula trails, all were dry we just rode early in the morning to stay away from the daily rain.

Thanks man, I went ahead an ordered the handlebar mount. But I have Shimano, I'm not sure if the brakes are Deore or XT... My bike came with either Deore brakes, and XT Shifters, or the other way around. I don't know off the top of my head which is which, and I didn't have a chance to go home and look before ordering it... So I just went with the handlebar mount.

New bike day - Meta AM. Only had time last night to quickly slap it together and check it for any shipping damage...stoked to get it dialed in and out on the trails in a few days!
