I just don't get it... why doesn't Toyota give these people a Tacoma? I can't imagine any sane Australian actually liking the Hilux...

Yeah, I don’t know why toyota produces plastic toy in NA and won’t give us the real truck they sell to Australians! Can’t imagine any sane person liking Tacoma /s

Don’t really get the love, that hilux looks more like a ridge line. The older hilux looked better.

The land cruiser in the link above looks like it’s from 20 years ago, actually like it better.

Land cruiser is not a mid size pickup, so it’s kinda like posting a picture of a dump truck for comparison.

70s series pickups smaller and shorter than NA Tacoma

5245 mm for DCSB LC70 vs 5393 mm for DCSB Tacoma

I know that, but no one (I know) considers a Land Cruiser a “pickup truck”, though arguably the one with the deck could be considered one.

I’m not arguing with you, but just saying, colloquially, no one would buy an LC70 and then tell you to check out their new mid-size ‘Pickup’. Mentally, if not physically, they occupy a different class.

So that picture in the OP is the Hilux "Rogue" which would translate to something like the "Limited" version of the tacoma. Its a self admitted lifestyle truck.

BUT if you look at the specs vs the tacoma: Hilux Rogue Approach angle: 30* vs Tacoma 29* (non-offroad models). Where it suffers though is an inch lower ground clearance and 3-4* of departure angle. Weirdly, it has the better approach angle of the 3 trim packages. The 2 offroad designed ones are 29* in line with the stock tacoma, but have about 1/2 in more ground clearance that a stock tacoma.

I guess my point is that they are actually very similar to tacomas in relevant to offroad specs, so they'll do just fine offroad. Looks are subjective, but I would venture they don't look "bad" just maybe not burly like the LC utes.

So how does it compare to an OR Taco with no air dam?

Well it's more or less apples to oranges because you'd be comparing 2 different target segment models.

If I compared the "Rugged" (red one) to the TRD Offroad

    Approach of 28* vs 32*

    Clearance of 9.9" vs 9.4"

    Departure of 21* vs 23.5*

I'd venture to guess that the height difference will partially offset the lower angles, but I'm not gonna break out the TI-89 to confirm

Keep in mind that a lot of AUS is flat and rugged or sandy dunes so I don't think the little difference between them matters that much.

They'd sell about 500 landcruisers a year here. Bros can't even handle that their tacoma isn't whisper quiet, has manual seat adjustments & doesn't run 14's.

That was the early 90s with the 3.0 v6. Late 90s 4runners used the 3.4l v6 same as the Tacomas. Two very different engines in terms of reliability and power. The 3.0 was a dog.
