    I wanted an MT.
I use a remington 300 ultra mag. Shooting 150 Bonded Sirrico Bullets, i use it for the flat shooting trajectory, knockdown power, and knowing that I can take any animal that walks the North American Continent with it. I have other calibers, and i feel very certain that i can take 85% of NA big game animals with a 7mm-08...Its all about bullet construction, and where you put said bullet. I deer hunt with a 22-250 shooting a 60 grain nosler partition. I have shot deer up to 350 yds with it, i put it in the center of the shoulder and only once have i not gotten a complete pass through. I shoot all my deer directly in the shoulder, i have never had one run anywhere after i shot it, its hard to go anywhere with two broken front shoulders. My dad uses a 7mm remington mag, he has taken a 360 class elk with it and countless deer, his elk was shot behind the shoulder, exited through the opposing shoulder, broke the opposing shoulder, the elk never ran, it stood there, filled up with blood, and fell over dead. In conclusion, bigger calibers, bigger bullets, flatter trajectory, more lethal in the woods.

We hunt with a group and when we do drives the buckshot is safer and easier to hit a running deer. Some areas allow only buckshot also.

I shoot a 7mm 08 and my dad has the exact same gun but in .270
I would hands down take my -08 over his 270...less recoil, shoots flatter, I can use smaller bullets for bench shooting if I want..

i can't tell if you're kidding or not. ..but have you ever wondered where "buckshot" got it's name?

i've killed more deer with #1 buckshot than any rifle i own. ..but that has more to do with where i hunt. thick brush and over grown clear cuts mean the shots are usually 25-75 yards at the most. ...and the deer are usually hauling ass..

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Technically a 30-06 is a magnum .308. I own one rifle that isn't in a .200 caliber, my 30-30. I prefer the smaller rifles myself. I have a .243 that has never let a deer travel more than 10 yards after the shot. I have a .257 Weatherby Mag that turns ground hogs inside out. And of course my AR. The largest caliber I own (besides the 30-30 and muzzle loader) is a 7mm Mauser which I do not hunt with.

You guys really want to have some fun? Load some Accelerators in your 30 caliber rifles. You put a 223 round in the accelerator then load the sabot in the 30 caliber cartridge. You can get upwards of 6000 fps depending on the 30 caliber cartridge you use.

    Shot placement > caliber size

I have hunted since i was 14, and i have shot all 26 elk with either my Bow or my 243, and none have walked away. It's not the gun you use, is the shooter. The big bore calibers are for the small guy syndrome.:)

Ha... Or for the guys hunting bigger game, or at extreme ranges.

The .243 is an awesome round for taking deer at close ranges.. say out to 300 yards. But beyond that, you really aren't carrying adequate energy (1,000+ lbf-ft). It will punch holes in paper nicely out to 800+ meters though ;).

    Just my .02

Shooting animals at distances, defeats the original intent of hunting, There is no better adrenaline rush than being 25 yards from a rutting Bull Elk, Trust me. Rifles are really no challenge, get you self a Bow and go to Alaska and hunt yourself a Griz/Brown Bear, or a big cat.

Like I said, i have kill many elk with my 243 no problems, its about placement. Any body can kill an animal with a grenade launcher! It takes a real sportsman to stock there prey and take them down.

    Just Sayin!

The original intent of hunting is to eat... not get a rush. I don't hunt for sport and I don't agree with hunting for sport. It isn't a matter of sportsmanship or whatever you want to call it.

btw, OP, sorry for the thread hijack! Point of magnum == more knockdown power at longer ranges! Most people don't hunt in an environment that warrents the use.

Not a hater, I have a 338 Lapua Mag, but i don't hunt with it, I use if for long range paper. Don't get me wrong they have there place, i just don't find any challenge in shooting animals with at least doing some walking. I am really tired of the truck hunters who can't get there lazy ass out of the truck and they still call it hunting!! I guess i am just more of a traditionalist.. I like the great outdoors, that's why i Bow hunt one with nature at least for the weekends.
    Cheers,
