Advice requested: TEMPORARY ladder rack that works with TONNEAU

I have a 2014 Tacoma Access Cab. I need to buy a tonneau cover, but before I do I need to make sure it works with an OCCASIONAL (1x/year) ladder rack. The two off-the-shelf fixes are PRICEY, and have LIMITATIONS:
1) KB Voodoo URTC with one of their approved tonneau's
2) Bakflip CS).

Ideally, I would purchase a tonneau (hard or soft - leaning hard/tri-fold) and then attach the ladder rack for our annual trip, removing upon arrival at home. Would GREATLY prefer the tonneau to be closed during trip but would consider folding/rolling/detaching it if necessary.

This kind of rack (does not HAVE to be this particular unit) would be fine for my annual usage, and the price is right.

But I've looked at every option I could find and can't see how this would work with any of them.... except the aforementioned $1k KBVoodoo systems

 

Let me reiterate: I would settle for installing the ladder rack temporarily WHILE LEAVING THE TONNEAU OPEN/OFF. Looking at Undercover Ultra Flex or Bakflip MX4 it seems like there's just a small amount of top rail taken up by the tonneau's mounting rail. IF LEFT OPEN couldn't you use metal shims slightly taller than the tonneau mount rail, and with the cover off/up clamp a ladder rack in place?

 

what you're looking for only exists in a few forms. the ones you listed and the Retrax XR w/ Yakima Overhaul HD bed rack. That's it.

the ladder racks that connect to the bed rail need to sit directly against the bed side caps, so you'd need to find a tonneau that is completely removable.

 

I believe our boy Rustytaco71 has shown me the way, and it's NOT ladder bars:
Am now thinking Extang Solid Fold 2.0 and a KB Voodoo Hi Rise or Mobtown Low Rise. Combine these with a pair of (probably off-brand, maybe these)

J-Bars...off we go.
This system would let me run it open or closed. Closed means that it STAYS closed throughout trip, which seems like a pain in the ass for loading and unloading gear. Open means that the bed's contents are open to the elements/petty thievery, but means that I can run straps up and over the whole kayak/rack assembly to the front/rear bed cleats (trusting the rail system to much torque makes me nervous- should I be?). If things go as they should, I may even be able to sandwich my wife's 10.6' SUP between the (10') 'Yaks.

Am I missing something, or is this workable?

 

I purchased these J bars, ran a little cheaper. The only complaint I have is that they like to spin on the Yakima bars. I’m going to figure out a way to buy some rubber in between the plates and bar so it creates friction and won’t move. I also purchased some anti theft nuts. The J bars just have a simply spin on cap to tighten them down which can easily be removed in a minute and have the bars stolen. I put the nut after the cap that way it’s locked in place and can’t be tampered with.
