Hey any of you guys running a threaded DUB BB, mine started creaking a bunch on my ride yesterday? I took it out and cleaned it up but I was wondering if you guys are having similiar creaking?

    Questions from a newbie.

My wife and I (just retired) are going to start riding our bikes again. Mainly for exercise on paved trails nearby. We could be several miles from home/truck. The bikes have been unused for several years, just hanging in the garage. Bikes are identical not mountain bikes but not road bikes something in the middle. Cost is not really a factor but I do not like to waste money.

Should I replace the tubes and tires?

what should I carry for repairs? Tools/parts?

I would pump everything up and take for a short ride and if no dry rot then you should be fine!

2 tubes, a small portable pump and one tire lever for sure. Possibly a small multi-tool too.

I ride by myself 95% of the time. This is what I carry in my pack on every trail ride:

Hell yeah!! That bike is so awesome. Enjoy buddy!

That what I’m on. No creaks. Might not be the bb, creaks are notorious for traveling through the frame. More often then not it’s the seat... does it creak when standing and cranking? If not, service the pedals.
It’s pretty easy to work on the threaded stuff. If you’re sure that the issue, take the cranks off and check the bearings. Are they smooth? If yes, then remove the bb and clean, then put some grease on the shell, make sure everything has a decent amount of grease, is put together correctly (including those pesky o rings), and reassemble.

Same here, 95% solo. But I only carry one tube, one multi tool, a pump, chain breaker and quick links, zip ties, tire lever, and plug kit. It all fits in my one up pump with edc, and one of these (which fit in the frame triangle nicely with a water bottle).

This all means I ride with NOTHING ON MY BODY unless it’s a ride over 2 hours.

What all do you carry in that first aid kit? I never bother with one, because anything I can carry in a pocket kit like that is a "suck it up til you get to the trailhead" level injury

I am with you on that one. If it fits in your pocket then it probably won’t do any good for something that needs attention ASAP.

The only exception is a tourniquet and/or something to stop massive bleeding which are definitely important but I don’t see either in the picture.

If you’re talking the backcountry then I’d carry I more substantial first aid kit.

Yep. I take a decent kit with me when I go do the Whole Enchilada in Moab or Lunch Loops in GJ. That trail eats bikes and people on the daily a long-ish way from home.

3 CO2's AND pump AND 2 nozzles? Multi tool AND allen key set AND leatherman? And a whole roll of tape? You must be hard on your gear!!

This is more like my setup. Except I have the OneUp tool in my steerer tube with a tire plug kit and chain pliers. On more remote rides I carry first aid and a sawyer water filter, and sometimes a second tube, zip ties, etc.

Gumwall tires on the fixed gear were always a bad idea, so I swapped them with the street treads from the cross bikes. Blacked out is much better.

it'll creak after mud, water, grime and a lot of miles, put some grease on it and it will stop creaking

I’ve noticed that the bigger spindles get and the stronger cranks get more stress is transferred into the cups and even the bb shell threads. It’s a real big prob with a lot of high end carbon road bikes...

My Santa Cruz Tallboy sometimes creaks like crazy, other times dead quiet. It’s not the seatpost, and I be pulled apart the BB (threaded), tighten pedals etc and it still creaks, then two days later it’s silent, then starts creaking again. Seems to be worse on hot dry days. Today it protested louder than my lungs on a 600’ climb in full sun. I should disassemble the linkage but I’m lazy :) I did pull the shock, and it cycles smoothly and quietly through the full travel.

    It's probably overkill.

I've used two CO2s on a ride before. I also find the nozzles to be finicky. Pump is backup.

I prefer the larger Allen key set, but the Crankbros tool adds the 8mm and the chain tool.

Not sure what to say about the tape. I'll look for a half-size roll the next time I'm at the hardware store. :notsure:

I was looking for some opinions on how sturdy do you think this setup is? I was planning on camping and driving some trails as well as bringing the bikes. I didn't want to bash my hitch mounted rack. I've swapped out the bungies for ratchet straps, but I was curious how strong people thought the bed rail fork mounts were especially with bumps and leaning side to side.
