We used to run Oklahomas until someone quit. Every time someone got in a fight, they would have line up for Oklahomas over and over. We even loved to run them in darn little league. That drill is the most football drill there is.

This sissified America is killing me!!

Exactly! Coaches used it as a punishment/motivational type of drill. If there is a fight...Oklahoma, if there is an argument...Oklahoma, if both sides are doing well against each other...Oklahoma, if both sides are lacking motivation...Oklahoma, and at the end of each day/practice...Oklahoma. Those last ones most of the time would even determine who go to go change early and who had to run some extra sprints. It was a love/hate relationship but I wouldn't change it for anything! Heck, I'm pretty sure I ran a few Oklahomas last night against my 1 yr old daughter playing in the hallway!

Playing football is a choice. If you want to play the game, you take the risk. If want to reduce your chances of getting hurt, be bigger-faster-stronger than the guy across from you.

It's the NFL, not little league or high school. Why risk an injury to any one player who may be valuable to the team.

If it was little league or high school I'd see more reason to ban it as they do not usually have the best gear. I raced motocross and harescrambles each time I had a concussion you basically had to replace the helmet, a helmet was 300+ and my newest one is closer to 600. I understand risk, but I'm willing to pay for the protection and after each concussion it becomes easier to have another and I've had quite a few.

It's a safety and money issue, to say we're raising sissies because the NFL banned the drill is kind of funny.

We're raising them softer now, but the NFL is not a reason why.

There is not 1 player in the NFL that is having his arm twisted to be there? I would be willing to say 100% of the players in the NFL either had a full ride scholarship or have the money now to complete their degree and get a job. The problem lies more with the soft example that is being set rather than an injury. Its ridiculous how soft and pathetic this world is becoming.

Just to be fair, you should go call those NFL players soft and see how soft they really are.

I look at it this way, you know you can beat on a high performance car, but you aren’t going to do that outside of race conditions because you risk blowing something up. There’s no reason to prove these guys can hit off the field on a regular basis. Save the risk of injury for the ball game. That’s where the money is made anyway.

The NFL is all about athletic ability and the high profile NFL players didn't do the drill.

NFL is still going to have hard hits, and so is little league and high school, I think there's a place for practicing hit drills, but not as much as a punishment.

Any sport we watch on TV is generally the top of their profession, even the ones sitting on the bench. There's nothing soft about that.

Agreed. And to stay at that level means preserving your body as much as you can when money isn’t on the line. Now when it’s game time, different story.

The NFL is just one instance that I happen to be referring to, in a broad spectrum of the comment I made. It’s not only the banning of this specific drill that is making football take a turn for the worse, The idea that football should be non-contact until high school is another one that is stupid.

I started playing football in kindergarten and played all the way until I fractured my L4/L5 in high school. We ran Oklahomas almost every practice from kindergarten through high school. Many people quit because of that drill, if they can’t block/tackle/take a hit in a drill why should they be trusted to do it in a game setting.

To your point Tanner, I think Oklahomas are much more important pre-college football as the players have more to prove. I understand what you and Wes are saying in the larger picture. However, I don’t think the drill should be banned at any level.
