I did that to my truck early on as it was way too close to that hose.

But that is not what is causing the coolant leak, it’s the bypass tube, right and you have to take the manifold off to find it?, I have smelled someth8ng for awhile but never saw anything on the ground, have 24k on mine

Wonder if this would be covered by the extended platinum warranty? Never bought an extended warranty but every time I see something like this it makes think I should.

Yes, it would be covered under the Platinum extended warranty. Also, since it's on the engine, it should be covered under the standard 5 year/60K powertrain warranty.

So I occasionally smell a hint of something the smells like grilled hamburger grease but a little sweeter, hard to explain. Could this be coolant leaking and burning?

Yes. I would most definitely take a closer look. From my experience coolant was running on top of my exhaust so that would explain the "sweet" smell. Also, in my case I was low on coolant and actually had a small puddle in my garage where I park it.

Hey guys just found a coolant leak on my 2017 Tacoma it seems to be in the rear of the engine. Looks like there's been a lot of these happening with the water bypass joint.

Does anyone know if there's a redesign for this part or are they just going to replace with another that will crack after 30k lol....

Happened to my 2017 a couple of months back. Took it in because the heat coming out of the vents would fade to outside ambient temperature if I stopped at a light for a couple of minutes. Dropped it at the dealer (32k miles) and they found the bypass was leaking. They replaced it (had to order the part) and the tech told me instead of taking off the intake manifold he unbolted the motor mounts and "tipped" the engine a little bit...9hrs in and out! When they were done they found that my radiator was leaking from somewhere (couldn't determine exactly where) so they replaced that under warrant too!

Edit: asked if the radiator would've been covered under the power train warranty and he said "yeah" but didn't seem too confidant in his answer. Maybe an extended warranty in my near future!?

thank you so much! likely saved me a bunch of needless searching! was just about to look. I noticed faint smell of coolant tonight. reservoir is bit low after a long drive. However I did not mark where the coolant was when new.

I marked mine because it's a know issue. Thinking mine might be leaking as well.
