It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
You really want the fuse to blow before the cable catches fire. That's the whole point. If the cable is 175 amps, you need to fuse at LESS that that.

Most limit straps I found when researching stretch 1” for every 12” of strap. If yours didn’t advertise stretch specs I’d be leery

Warn does make a winch relay. They just don't say how many amps it can withstand. It won't protect against the wire catching fire if you've activated the relay but it'll keep your hot wire shorter in case of an accident.

The winch is going to draw 420 amps on startup and that will drop as pull continues. Graphs give the over rated amps the fuse will allow to pass for a set time say 200% for 5 min. But a short will cause fuse to blow in 0.1 min provided it exceeds the amperage of the fuse by 500% or more. Problem, the CCA of battery is 600 amps. So if you fuse for cable the winch will blow fuse and if you fuse for winch the cable will melt or worse before fuse blows. Is this the reason winch manufactures don’t suggest fusing?

It is rated at 500 amps. So you are thinking that solenoid switch will fail if >500 amps are drawn thus serving as a amp limiter.

No that's not what I was thinking. Though that'd be cool if it works that way. I'm saying that you can put the relay near your battery and leave it off unless you are using your winch. My fear of winch cables is getting into an accident and having the body cut into the hot wire. A relay can help mitigate that risk.

    A thing or two...
I have a nice pen that I was given at work. It's heavy, fits well in the hand, and writes really nice. I think I've replaced the cartridge in it once already. It looks like hell now with the black finish rubbing off and revealing the brass base material. I carried it daily for awhile. I'm paranoid of losing it now, so I don't anymore.

I also had a space pen for awhile. I lost that one. It was a great pen, too.

    This ^

It's more likely that the solenoid contacts would weld/fuse together if you pulled more than the rated current through it.

Drove the Taco to work today with intentions of getting the lift on. We'll see how that pans out. Have some wrenching to do on a bulldozer and have to replace our building tenant's water heater. Hopefully that goes smoothly...:fingerscrossed:
