Gas Pedal .... why do i need to cut it???

so i was cleaning my carpets and was curious. so i got down there are started to poke around.

this is what i found

pedal all the way up



and pedal down. the closest the pedal ever gets to the floor mat is a good 1 - 1.5 inchs.



so to conclude, there is zero chance that the gas pedal is ever going to hang up on basic tacoma floor mats.



and just to prove i'm not some dumbass, here is a pic of all three pedals.

 

Don't get it done, they will butcher your gas pedal.

 

If you properly secure mats that were made for your truck (like factory toyota mats, the all weather tacoma mats) then you won't have issues. It's the people who put in huge 1 inch think aftermarket walmart plastic floor mats that have issues.

Is there any chance the floor mat could slide forward? If so, it might hang up the gas pedal.

 

agreed. i tried a set once. they were brutal. pulled them out and said screw it. floor mats are meant to get dirty.

 

stock mats are held in place by two clips. unless you don't have the clips, the pads aren't going anyplace. and even if you didn't have the clips, i don't see them sliding up to the point of interfering with the pedal.

 

Because you're an idiot that believes anything the media can convince you of? You don't know how to turn off the key if you're stepping on the gas by mistake (instead of the brake)? You don't know how to put it in neutral? You don't even know which pedal IS the brake? You're just plain stupid?

If you meet all these criteria, and I do mean ALL of them, then that's why you need to have someone remove your pedal and take a hacksaw to it.

BUT WAIT!!! This is only the beginning. Have you ever done anything stupid in your life? Wait till you see the tools they have to fix that!

The item completely ignored by the media in this whole floormat situation was the improper use of equipment. If you have multiple stacked floormats, some of which are not made for your vehicle, shit may happen.

Concurrently, if you remove your driver's seat, reinstall it facing backward, and attempt to drive the vehicle by straddling your legs around the backrest, you may find operation of the vehicle more difficult.

Lesson: When equipment is operated improperly, it may perform improperly. How this surprises anyone is a mystery to me.

i swear im not tryng to make stuff up but a couple days ago i was passing someone and my pedal got stuck not because my trucks fault but because my fault i took the hooks out when i washed my carpet and i forgot to put them back so the floor mat whent all the way forward and made a wedge with the gas pedal it was a scary situation but with a little bit of brains you will do just fine, first i shifted into neutral but accidentally went into reverse no biggy but noticed i was reeving high 6k7k high so i turned the truck off pulled my floor mat and heard the gas pedal get unstuck took it to the dealer to make sure everything was fine and got new clips for the floor mats.

 

No it wasn't directed at you or anyone else. Just trying to provide a little humor to a ridiculous situation.

Lastly, thank Toyota for caving in to political correctness.

(although I do give Toyota some slack, they are a corporation for profit...unfortunately, there are many including the aforementioned, who love to shake down any profitable corporation for their own political...financial...or ideological wants/needs)

 

I got the recall done. I got my pedal cut and the software fix that if the throttle is engaged and you hit the brakes, the throttle is closed so you can stop without the engine revving.

Why did I do it? I'm happy for the software fix. The pedal? I couldn't care either way. With the pedal cut, I NOTICE NO DIFFERENCE WHEN USING IT. My foot sits mid to high on the pedal anyway, not at the bottom. So it doesn't hurt a bit to have it cut.

Final thought: Getting this done might help with resale value later for some concerned, future potential buyer when/if I decide to sell it.



Slightly on topic: My brother is a Dodge/Chrysler mechanic. He has seen people come in with 3 sets of floor mats. THREE!!!!!!! As all safety campaigns go they're designed to save everyone, even the dumb.

 

Ok people....I had this done the other day while getting rear spring TSB done. When I picked the truck up, I had forgotten about it, and I DID NOT EVEN NOTICE. NOTHING changes with the feel of the pedal, all they do is grind off the bottom corners about 1/4". Why is everyone making such a big deal out of this? It changes nothing about the truck...at all. NOT doing it will not be a good selling point. I'm jus surprised by all the "NO WAY!" responses

 

No one is going to remember the recall and fairytale reports of stuck gas pedals in a year. Resale will be just fine.

If the frames rust out from underneath the body in 8 years or so.....that might affect resale

 

Sure, but I don't see why people are freaking out about having some plastic shaved off the pedal, not like they're replacing it w/ a postage stamp

 

they could glue ADD a half inch of pedal and still not have a problem with the stock mats
