    Awesome man, thank you for the clarification on that and thank you for keeping up on this thread! For people who suck with anything electric (me!) this is a life saver!


    Edit:

    Works like a charm on the short test drive I did. All worked in 4hi/lo and 2wd. Relay worked as it should with the LED coming on once the locker was engaged.

    Spose after some actual driving we will see if my wiring and solder job will hold since it was my first time soldering. I did however end up soldering the Y into the purple wire instead of using a tap.

    Thanks again for this write up, 2wd locked is some of the best fun for me :p

    This only works with the factory locker installed in the Off Road model.

    Sorry - missed your post. The video linked in the first post shows how to make your own. HOWEVER, and this is important, depending upon the relay you use there are differences and need to be considered. If you get it wrong fuses will be blown. If you're game to try post here. I'll try to pay better attention.

    My life is in boxes right now and I can't make a better video, but once I'm moved into my new place getting the instructional video sorted out is on the top of my list.

    Should a diode be installed on all relays?
    Or is there a relay that already has it installed?

    The short answer is yes. The slightly longer answer is electrical engineers take all of this into account when designing a circuit, but when we add a relay it is up to us to mitigate the voltage spike. Water flowing in pipes is a good analogy for electricity. When you shut flowing water off quickly you will get a water hammer and the pipes will bang and valves get damaged. When you quickly shut off electricity flowing through a coil there is a voltage spike that can easily damage electronics.

    I was/will be again making and selling a relay with the diode correctly installed. I've searched high and low looking for a pre-made option with no luck at all. That's why I started making them myself. And, with all of that said I ran mine without a diode for quite a while without any issues. In the scheme of things it's not like the relay gets used a lot.

    Great post. Good explanation and great rant. I think I will stick to rule#1 and just put the truck in 4WD-Lo if I need to rather than doing all of this. I belong to rule #9 --- take the easy way out and use the truck's stock features.

    I'm still around, sort of. Life = Crazy. It's all good but there is little time for anything but projects. I was going to get back to this in the fall, but life . . .

    Anyway, My plan is to get going again January 11. The projects should be done by then

    I made a youtube video. I'm not real happy with it because the diode install is backwards from what the instructions say above. And If you get it backwards fuses blow.

    I've updated the video so it matches the instructions on the first post.
