As the title says, I live in Miami, FL and I just bought a trd off road 4x4 (my first 4x4 vehicle).

The users manual indicates to drive at least 10 miles a month on 4hi to keep all components lubricated.

What does a person like me that does not off road as often do to keep everything lubricated as the manual says?

Can I engage 4hi on my relatively calm neighborhood and drive DEAD straight for 5 blocks at low speed (max 30mph)? Will this damage my truck? Why? If I’m not turning AT ALL i don’t see how am I damaging the vehicle. Please explain. Please don’t be a dick... thanks in advance.

All good. I do this all the time when I don’t have a chance to get off road.

It’s also not a bad idea, in an empty parking lot, to actuate into 4-lo and hit your rear locker once in a while to keep those actuators free. Again, in a straightish line. Sometimes you have to weave a little to get the locker to lock.

You can go on a 100mph police chase in 4hi on pavement as long as you keep your direction straight. Potential damage only occurs when you bind up the drivertrain. As long as you stay in a relatively straight line you'll be fine.

What about a road that has some slight curves in it. US1 in my area marked in red. Speeds between 60 and 65 max.

I wouldn't risk it personally but in all honesty you'd probably be fine. I drove over 100 miles down a stretch of highway this past winter that was probably 75% covered in snow/ice...with stretches of dry areas in between. I was in 4hi the entire time and never had anything bad come of it.

At higher speeds you're safer taking gradual turns in 4wd than you are taking tighter turns at low speed.

It's fine man. Avoid parking lot turns that's all.

@hiPSI is correct. Avoid turning tight and you’ll be fine, normal driving and slight bends in the road on dry pavement won’t be a problem.

Done great multitudes of parking lot turns in my Jeep in 4HI on the beach. I'd think the sand would give before anything broke.

Way some talk about these trucks, I wonder. I'm talking 90 degree hard turns at parking speeds.

You can do parking lot turns on the beach, I think the point is not on pavement where you have high traction.

I live in the northwest and can tell you that my 2nd gen doesn't mind driving in 4HI at 60mph on the highway and does just fine at lower speeds around daily driving turns (even a little drifting) on slick surfaces. Also have done light wheeling in my truck and asides from my aftermarket tires rubbing a bit on bumps while turning sharply does just fine. 4LO is a bit bindy on sharp turns but thats to be expected with almost any 4x4

Thanks for the feedback. I’m confident now that I won’t damage anything as long as I’m going straight.

No problem going straight. If you’re worried, wait till it’s raining and there is reduced friction to avoid stressing the drivetrain.

You don't need to get 10mi in all at once. I get a couple miles per week on the mile-long straight section on the way to work.

If you've got a relatively straight road in your neighborhood just engage 4wd on that section a few times a month and you should be fine

I take a 3 mile DEad straight stretch of road with traffic lights every day (the famous “Calle ocho” here in MIA). so if I just do it once a week I’m good.. 12miles per month...

ha, I have family right there. do A1A from flagler to ormond. 10 miles of straight road. Although us1 only has gradual curves. Have you done SR 11, between bunnell and deland? That road is beautiful. My sister and i did that this spring. Nothing but farm, ranch, and forest for over an hour.

I do the same with my 3rd gen. Get some slight binding going around switchbacks up to Schweitzer to go skiing and if I turn too tight in a parking lot in the winter.

That's one of my favorite bike rides...11 to 40 thru the Ocala National Forest.

US1 to 204 to 207 to 13 along the St. Johns River to 214 into St. Augustine is another good ride.
