Is the dealer lying or just stupid? UPDATE!

Always remember the internet is only as smart as the user. Please don't bash our Tacoma brothers for their free advice. At least they tried to help you without even knowing you. Go to a store where someone is paid to help you and let me know how that works out for you. Tacoma brothers I thank you for your advice and the some snipe comments lol.

 

Yes, I'm the original owner. I purchased it new as a delivery truck for my auto parts stores in May of 1996. I kept it when I sold my business about 5 years latter and it's been my primary daily driver until I purchased my 2018 TRD Sport not quite a year ago. I still drive it several times a week. I do change the the engine oil every 5000 miles and as you can see from the photos and problem free history, it's been very well taken care of over the last 23 years.

My point is that some owners go crazy over vehicle maintenance, for example we have C7 owners on the Corvette forum who don't even track their cars however change their coolant and rear end fluid at 10,000 miles which is freaking ridiculous, however to each their own.

 

I have read numerous posts on TW about Toyota selling Tacoma's low on transmission fluid .

 

Edit: I get that OP drove three hours (rt) and waited three hours at the dealer now.

Did anybody tell you to go to a dealer? That specific dealer?

Are you experiencing issues with the transmission? If so, have you described these issues to a service advisor? There is a tsb for some trans issues.

Does your truck have the tow package?

Since my 10/15 TX built Taco shitfs smoothly, it never occurred to me to have it checked.

Like others have said in this thread, use common sense and a healthy dose of cynicism with everything you read here.

Mind boggling though that one of the largest vehicle manufacturers in the world would allow hundreds of thousands of trucks roll off the line with a potentially catastrophic flaw.

I for one am skeptical about this.

 

Lol , there's dozens of threads on here that say the transmission's dosen't shift smoothly . Everyone is ganging up on the OP and I'll take his side for trying to do preventive maintenance .

 

@Qhorse13 go find the dipstick on your truck and get back to us.

 

As an enthusiast's site, I am often surprised at how many people are willing to give advice about stuff they don't know anything about. Every time I hear about checking transmission fluid level and the engine learning your driving and it'll get better in 10,000 miles, I just shake my head.

That being said, you have some responsibility in this. No sense in being bitter about it. Use your critical thinking skills to make decisions, even if it's to take the advice from someone else. Learn how stuff works.

You wasted over 6 hours and $100 that day.

Or

You spent $100 and gain 6 hours of experience.

You’re a grown man and ultimately decided what you want to do. Don’t blame others for your own decisions.

This truck (and especially dat dash cluster) serves as a GREAT example of what a Toyota pickup is and should be. I had one like that, didn’t even have a tach, and it was a manual. Nobody complained. Nowadays if you have an automatic without a tach it’s a crisis. Simple, small, durable.

 

My AT has a tach. I don't even need it. Why the hell did Toyota waste my money by putting a tach on my truck! This will be the last Toyota I ever buy!

 

The OP made a choice he chose to read those reviews.
He chose to have his truck checked. And now has peace of mind.

My truck never had any tranny problems. I still checked the fluid myself per the procedure and found it to be a quart low. Cost me a few hours time in the garage and $20 because I bought two quarts of the fluid from my Toyota dealer.

Op should be glad his truck was checked and confirmed ok. It’s a mere $100. A minor blip in the life of his truck and a teeeeeeny % of the overall cost of the vehicle to be sure it’s right.

 

Paying the 100 bucks is typical 1 hr labor fee.. some are more expensive. Why was this service recommended? Tranny flush usually isnt until 100k unless you bring it in for a tranny issue. If you didnt bring it in for an issue, the SA sucked you right in.
That being said, to check your tranny fluid, they have to bring the vehicle temp up to a certain, and pull the plug on your tranny, there isnt a dipstick to pull and just check it, so that's where your hour of labor comes in. Granted, it doesn't take an hour to do but you're gonna get hit with a one hour minimum. A guy still gotta get paid for doing the work.

 

Yep, I agree, simplicity at it's best. Manual trans, roll-up windows, manual locks, am/fm radio, does have AC which still blows freezing cold.
