replaced factory stereo-still not great

So i bought a Pioneer DEH-4900ib CD player and a sirius tuner to replace the factory stereo in my 07 double cab...

i was originally going to replace the speakers, but was told by several people that i'd be suprised how great it sounded with a new receiver - well, to be honest, i'm not impressed.

anyone out there do the same thing? or do you just end up replacing the speakers as well?

 

I would replace the speakers as well, might as well go the whole nine yards. Are you thinking about getting an amp too? That might help....

I have the DEH 7900 BT and It MADE a massive difference to my truck, the sounds out of the speakers are 100% better, but they will go in time. I've got a Memphis sub and amp too which is totally different too, much cleaner. Next step will be probably amplify the stock speakers, pop them then get new ones!

 

I first replace my deck with a JVC KD-G820 + iPod connection. The sound quality was much better after the deck upgrade alone. Now I have a Pioneer DEH-P7800MP + iPod connection, and the sound is even better still.

I plan on replacing the speakers when the money is available. Right now - not so much.

I think that my deck (the base 1 CD radio) had horrible sound quality. That is why the JVC and Pioneer sound so much better.

 

I had the Pioneer 5900 installed and it made a HUGE difference. Try adjusting the audio settings (turning the loud setting on, adjusting the bass, treble, etc.). I recently replaced it with the Pioneer Premier 980BT with built in Bluetooth and replaced the speakers with Alpines and amped them with a 250x4 Alpine amp. After about a week of tuning the sound, it sounds perfect.

 

I know it can get expensive but have you seen those stock speakers in the front doors? 6x9's with magnets the size of quarters. I have a few suggestions for you. If you want good sound go with those MB Quarts as suggested earlier. Make sure you replace the mid and the tweeter. Most of the money you spend on car stereo equipment should go into the speakers, especially if you like loud clear sound like me. The higher grade speakers require alot more power, you will need an amplifier to get the full benifit. Again it can get expensive so do it in steps. While you have the door panels off, get some generic sound foam like Dynomate but you can get the generic stuff online for much cheaper. (Check mcmaster.com) I have 3 amps in my double cab. One under each seat (one amp for the front and one for the back) A third amp under the rear seat that drives a 10" sub. These Tacomas have an AC vent under the seat which can conveniently keep your amps cool. This may be more than what you want to do but just some 2 cents from another Tacoma owner with a passion for car audio.

Keep in mind that the receiver you purchased produces 22watts RMS per channel. I am betting that your system does sound better with the new unit, but you were expecting more of a difference. Because the factory unit probably produces like 15 watts per channel, there is only a little difference in power. The unit you purchased comes with a very useful feature. It has 4volt preamp output. Normally, low end units are only 2volt. What that means to you is that if you connect an amplifier to it, you will get super clean sound with low distortion. If you are looking to get great sound out of your new unit, you have two choices.1) buy new aftermarket speakers for your truck. You don't have to buy the MB Quarts mentioned;although they are one of the best. Just buy some that will fit in your doors without modifiying and make sure they are made of quality materials. That alone will make all the difference. 2) take advantage of your new deck, install an amp to that bad boy and replace your speakers with some high powered ones. It all boils down to how much do you want to spend? Let me know if I can be of further help.

stock speakers are crap...replace them

 

I have two 6-1/4 in my old 95 truck. They are great speakers and still sound good after all these years. I just got a 08 Tacoma and when it is time to swap speakers out I will buy those again. Not real cheap but worth the money.

 

I replaced my stereo but still not real happy with the sound so i will be upgrading the speakers in the doors soon.

 

aftermarket stereos often have many types of filters and things to improve the sound. has the deck been tuned properly? and that means more than just playing with the sliders and knobs until it "sounds good"

 

Please explain "tuning a deck"

 

Probably an amplifier would fix the sound quality, Or an equalizer/Amp.

 

adjusting the equalizer, setting the balance and fade, loud on/off, high pass and/or low pass filter on/off, if there is a sub- set the output level and frequency... stuff like that

with all of these things that most aftermarket decks have, sometimes if the wrong thing is turned on, or the right thing is turned off, or a combination of incorrect settings will just kill the quality of sound... you should understand what each thing does and know when and how to use it.
