DC Headrests Removed Now I can see!

I decided to clean my rear window and took my DC's rear headrests off.
yeah I don't clean it much & only think its been open once.
After all that hard work lol it was like what the hey lets clean the front windshield too!
Well..
Lo' & behold
I peek in the rearview & notice I can now see things behind me!
It was quite the revelation (not really..ok maybe a little)
but I didn't put those dang things back in place.
for it is quite nice now to actually see out my rear window & not just because I windex'd it.
How many DC owners run without any rear headrests?
If you do not, do you store them somewhere in the truck for passengers?

Might have to try this out. Good idea.

 

Make sure you put them back if anyone rides in the rear...they are there for safety, not comfort.

 

I tend to run with either the middle headrest removed or all three of them removed. As for storage, I keep them in the larger storage compartment behind the passenger rear seat. It takes a little bit of tetris like moves, but they all fit in there ok. Lately though I have just been running without the middle headrest and it makes a big difference.

 

I removed mine the day after I got it home. I also have 2 car seats installed so no need keep them on hand. they are in a bag in my garage. I can't believe how much visibility they took away when set at the proper height for passengers.

 

Yeah, that was my first "mod" when I got the truck, like literally as soon as I parked it after coming off the dealer lot.

I used to keep them in the backseat, now they're in my garage. It's my DD, and I put them in if expecting friends. Otherwise they're collecting dust somewhere.

I too like seeing out my back.

 

When I bought my DC the last owner took the rear head rests out so I didn't get any

 

I pulled mine the day I purchased my Taco. I have them stored in a box with all the other stock goodies. Never liked the blockage of the rear window and how hard it is to fold down the seats with them installed (long legs).

 

middle one has been out since day one, i keep it behind the sea incase i need it fir a 5th passenger, lol, wont happen

 

I took mine out recently also and you are right, so much easier to see out the back window! I left the little one in the middle and was thinking about getting 2 more of those from the junk yard to use instead of the big ones.

I don't think I've ever had a person in the back seat, so I'm just going to store them in the compartment behind the seat.

 

Which is ironic since it is arguably equally unsafe to back up without clear view to rear. Not everyone has that camera.

I remember, though, my Rodeo had an open-centered headrest in back so I could see through the opening in the middle. That would have been the smart thing to do, but the stylists and marketing wins again.

Until someone wins the law suit...

 

I had the same thought, but they are different widths. The little one won't fit in the holes for the other two

 

IIRC, the middle one has different spacing for the mounting posts

 

IMO they should do what BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, etc., do with the flip-down rear headrests. When not using them they are folded down and don't obstruct vision. When somebody sits there, they flip them up into position.

 

Interesting, must be a height thing or something.

When I look in my rearview mirror the top of the center headrest does not even come up to the tailgate, so removing it gives me nothing. As for the outboard headrests, you would thing they'd be intrusive, but I use my outside mirrors to check the small blindspots that the headrests leave.

In other words they don't bother me much being there. Also I would not remove them as I have 2 sons that ride in the backseat all the time. I want the headrests in there.

 

Same here, never had an issue seeing behind me. I can see the tailgate when I look over my shoulder out the back and I've got back-up sensors to warn me about something low that I might back into.

 

Yea I have never had a problem! I can see right across my entire cover and see the back portion of it. But I usually use my side mirrors and back up camera! I am just good like that lol

Those things (at a minimum) should be standard safety equipment on any vehicle with an obstructed rear view...

 

I'm short 5'7" so I have had my center headrest out since day 1. The other 2 don't bother me any as I use my mirrors to see. I rarely turn my head to look out of the rear window. I learned to drive using a welding rig so never could see out of the rear window.
